Jimmy Garoppolo: AFC team urged to make trade 'right now' for 49ers quarterback

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

ESPN analyst and former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum has claimed that the Cleveland Browns should be making a move to sign Jimmy Garoppolo as soon as possible.

Despite having a record of 33-16 for the San Francisco 49ers across the regular and postseason, with one of those seasons ending in a Super Bowl appearance and last season reaching the NFC Championship game, the number of injuries that Jimmy Garoppolo has picked up and a couple of sub-par performances when it mattered (such as in that Super Bowl where he went 20 for 31, threw for just 219 yards and had 1 touchdown to 2 interceptions) saw the team feel the need to draft his heir apparent in Trey Lance in 2021.

News emerged last night that the 49ers, even though they could have kept Garoppolo on for another year whilst Lance developed, are allowing the 30-year-old to find a new team and will facilitate trade talks for his services.

It is realistically a little late in the summer for moves like this to be made, with the draft and free agency used to fill a lot of spots, however as Baker Mayfield’s move to the Carolina Panthers showed, there are still deals to be made if you can find a partner.

What has Tannenbaum said?

Speaking on ESPN’s Get Up, Tannenbaum claimed that due to the circumstances surrounding the Cleveland Browns and quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is highly likely top spend a significant part of the season suspended over sexual misconduct allegations, Garoppolo would be a much better option for them than the other quarterbacks already on their roster.

He was also adamant that the deal needed to be done as soon as possible because of the time it would take for Garoppolo and the Browns to gel with each other as they try to build an offense together:

“They have a really good football team and Jimmy Garoppolo is a better football player than Jacoby Brissett assuming that Deshaun Watson will be suspended.

“They need to make that trade right now Greeny [Mike Greenberg]… It’s really hard to acclimate a quarterback this late in the process.

“So every day that goes by the Jimmy Garoppolo is not a Cleveland Brown, his value to them goes down.”

Going all in

The Browns have been on an upward trajectory in recent years, winning their first playoff game since the 1990s back in 2020 and amassing some serious talent including running back duo Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb, as well as star defenders in defensive ends Myles Garrett and cornerback Denzel Ward.

And given the monster contract that they gave to Watson, as well as the number of draft picks they sent back to the Houston Texans, they clearly feel that this is a team that can compete for a Super Bowl right now.

With Garoppolo having taken his team deep in the playoffs twice, and winning two Super Bowls whilst as a backup with the New England Patriots, he has the winning touch that the Browns need to help get them over the top. Now it’s just a matter of whether or not the two sides decide to make a deal happen.
