Khabib: When UFC star called out Floyd Mayweather & trolled Conor McGregor in one video

Ever since Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor’s incredible crossover fight in 2017, which remains the second best-selling pay-per-view bout of all time, call outs from UFC fighters to boxers and boxers to UFC fighters, and even now a host of YouTubers facing professional fighters, has become a greater part of the norm in professional combat sports.

However, most of these call outs unfortunately do not materialise, much to the disappointment of many fans.

One such bout that had both boxing fans and MMA fans licking their lips was the teeing up for a boxing match between two undefeated legends of their respective sports, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Floyd Mayweather.

Back in October 2018, a video appeared on Leonard Ellerbe’s, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Instagram page, which featured Khabib calling out Mayweather to put their two undefeated records to the test.

The Eagle did not hold back in showing his desire to step into the foreign boxing ring, arguing: “Let’s go Floyd. We have to fight now; 50-0 versus 27-0. We are two guys who never lose. Because in the jungle there is only one king. Of course, I am the king because he cannot drop McGregor, but I drop him easily. Let’s go.”

Khabib, of course, was referring to his fourth round submission of bitter rival Conor McGregor just a week earlier, in which the Dagestani impressed many with his standing boxing skills against the tricky boxer McGregor. Thus, the confidence to call out Mayweather a mere week after his dispatch of the Notorious Irishman was understandable and had fans waiting in anticipation for a response.

And a response from Floyd did not take long, promptly releasing a tweet asking CBS, Showtime and MGM Grand to, in typical ‘Money’ Mayweather fashion, “get the chequebook out!”

Unfortunately, though, a bout never materialised, which is surprising considering the huge financial opportunity that such a monumental matchup would have offered both fighters. It is widely reported that Khabib ended up rejecting a $100m offer to box Mayweather as well.

The ultimate Khabib Nurmagomedov quiz: Where was he born?

However, Mayweather has not fought a professional fight since his 10th-round TKO of McGregor in 2017, and Khabib went on to only compete in two more UFC bouts since his own defeat of McGregor, clinching victories against Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, before retiring early last year with an incredible 29-0 record.

Therefore, with both fighters having seemingly lost a desire to seriously compete in their sports, it is unlikely that we will ever witness this iconic ‘a 0 has got to go’ battle that we got so hyped for, in either the Octagon or boxing ring.

However, crazier things have happened!
