Mateja Kezman will sadly always be remembered as one of the Premier League's biggest flops.

The Serbian striker was snapped up by Chelsea for around £5.3 million as part of Roman Abramovich's revolution in the summer of 2004.

Kezman arrived at Stamford Bridge with a glowing reputation. At previous club PSV Eindhoven, he'd scored goals for fun.

In 176 games across all competitions with the Dutch outfit, Kezman bagged 129 goals, a record any forward would be proud of.

But he really struggled at Chelsea - to say the least.

During the 2004/05 season, his one and only with the Blues, Kezman made the net bulge just seven times.

Only four of those goals came in Premier League action and it took him 13 appearances in the competition to register his first.

And Kezman's drought in the English top-flight would have gone on far longer had it not been for a special request by Jose Mourinho.

The Chelsea boss at the time took matters into his own hands when his side were awarded a penalty during a home match against Newcastle in December of 2004.

After Damien Duff was upended in the box, Mourinho demanded that the resulting spot kick be taken by Kezman, who grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

The 2003 Dutch Footballer of the Year stepped up and took the risky route of performing the Panenka skill move - which fortunately for him paid off.

Fair play, Mateja.

Most strikers who've gone 13 league games without a goal would have opted to smash the ball as hard as they could, but not Kezman.

A few months after getting on the scoresheet against Newcastle, Kezman repeated the feat in the 2005 League Cup final victory over Liverpool.

Shortly after his heroics against Rafa Benitez's side, he rippled the back of the net in Premier League action against Norwich.

Towards the end of March in 2005, Kezman bagged his one and only brace for Chelsea in a 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

That wasn't enough to persuade the Blues to keep him, though. Kezman was sold to Atletico Madrid, where his struggles continued to some degree.

He went on to represent Fenerbahce, Paris Saint-Germain, Zenit Saint Petersburg, South China, and BATE Borisov throughout the remainder of his career, eventually calling it quits in 2012.

These days, Kezman is a sports agent, with Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic one of his many high-profile clients.
