Victor Osimhen is the most expensive signing in Napoli’s history.
Snapped up for an eye-watering €70 million in the summer of 2020, Osimhen arrived at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium with the pressure of making the Neapolitans legitimate Serie A title contenders on his shoulders.
The 23-year-old had been snapped up on the back of an impressive season with Lille in which he scored 18 goals from 38 outings.
Osimhen’s journey to Napoli
Osimhen’s first introduction to European football had come at Wolfsburg for whom he never actually scored, but he nevertheless managed to thrive while on their books out on loan with Charleroi in Belgium.
The Napoli star also boasts a sensational record for Nigeria with 15 strikes, including a four-goal haul against São Tomé and Príncipe this summer, from just 22 senior caps.
And life in Italy has been relatively bountiful for Osimhen as he opened his account for Gli Azzurri with 10 goals in his debut campaign, before raising the bar to 18 strikes across the 2021/22 season.
Osimhen prepares for 2022/23
In fact, such has been the impressive nature of Osimhen’s performances that his stock has only continued to rise with various reports linking him with moves to Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
However, for now, Osimhen remains a Napoli player and his preparations for a third year at the club are well underway as he joins his teammates in pre-season training.
Only, the Nigerian ace hasn’t exactly made positive headlines with his behaviour in Napoli’s training camp as he was actually sent off by manager Luciano Spalletti during a public session this week.
Osimhen ejected from public training
According to Football Italia, remarkable footage that has done the rounds on social media shows Osimhen being told to leave training at the Castel di Sangro camp in full view of the supporters in attendance.
The report explains that Osimhen had become enraged at what he considered to be a foul from new teammate Leo Ostigard during a game between sections of the Napoli squad.
Osimhen’s protestations got so out of hand that Andre Zambo Anguissa tried to calm him down, before Spalletti told him to leave the pitch and reportedly remarked: “You are talking too much, go and have a shower.”
Funnily enough, that did little to temper Osimhen as he exited the field looking just as animated as beforehand, rounding off a remarkable few seconds of drama that you can check out down below:

You could cut the tension with a knife.
Awkward scenes in front of fans
Public training sessions are always a fascinating way for the fans and media alike to look under the bonnet at a club’s inner workings, but seldom is the peek behind the curtain such that moments like this transpire.
At the end of the day, it’s good that Spalletti presumably didn’t allow the circumstances of the training session to influence his decision, but it doesn’t make the public dressing down feel any less awkward.
But if it’s in the interest of maintaining order, standards and decorum, then perhaps Napoli fans will be sympathetic to the call regardless of whether it’s their club-record signing or not.
After all, if Osimhen can use his telling off as motivation to hit the ground running this season, then everyone’s a winner in the long run.
