Anthony Martial had to pull Bruno Fernandes up for not providing him with a single assist on Manchester Unitedâs pre-season tour as the team flew back from Australia.Martial, whose Old Trafford future was in serious doubt this summer following an underwhelming loan spell at Sevilla last season, impressed new manager Erik ten Hag and the clubâs fans with his eye-catching pre-season performances. The French striker, who has been with United since 2015, scored in his sideâs victories over Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace.Martial is now expected to start the 2022-23 season as Man Utdâs first-choice centre-forward unless Cristiano Ronaldo makes a U-turn on his desire to leave the club.BRIGHTON, ENGLAND - MAY 07: Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United looks on during warm up for the Premier League match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United at American Express Community Stadium on May 07, 2022 in Brighton, England. Martial and Fernandes' conversation before tour started
Before Unitedâs pre-season tour began, Martial asked Fernandes to âgive me some assists pleaseâ while on the plane to Thailand.
âI will for sure, man,â Fernandes replied. âYou know that we have that connection.â
The Portuguese midfielder was right with his prediction that Martial would be back scoring goals, but he was unable to deliver on his assists promise.
Martial reminds Fernandes of his pre-tour promise
And Martial reminded his teammate about this on the flight home from Australia.
âHere we are again with Tony Martial,â Fernandes said. âThe guy of the tour. The man who scores loads of goals for us. How was the tour for you, Anthony? Did you like it?â
Martial replied: âIt was very good but⦠you didnât give me one assist!â
Fernandes said: âYouâre right, you know why? Iâm putting everything on the league!â
That answer was good enough for Martial, who chuckled before saying: âI like that!â

Thereâs a clear bromance between Martial and Fernandes. United fans will be hoping the pair can combine for many goals under Ten Hag this season.
Fernandes also caught up with several other teammates on the plane journey home, including two young stars of the tour: Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage.
Which other teams will Man Utd play this summer?
There appears to be a feel-good factor in the United camp again. The team have two more pre-season friendlies left (against Atletico Madrid on July 30, and Rayo Vallecano one day later at Old Trafford) before their first competitive fixture of the new campaign against Brighton on August 7.
