Boxing legend Lennox Lewis had the perfect response as he hit back at a Twitter user who questioned the legitimacy of his win over Mike Tyson.

The two men had a heated rivalry and an infamous build-up to their blockbuster fight back in 2002.

But it was The Lion who stood tall after a stunning eighth-round knockout win over the Baddest Man on the Planet.

And Lewis, 56, took the time out of his day to respond to a critic's message about his famous victory over Tyson, also 56, replying to a post that was shared to his Twitter account almost three years ago.

The former undisputed heavyweight world champion's post consisted of a video of their infamous brawl at their press conference, where Tyson provoked Lewis into a rage before going on one of the most obscene rants in the history of the sport.

Commenting on Lewis' original tweet, the fan wrote: "Yeah well maybe it should have been suspended Lewis so it never happened at all!

"It's a nonsense fight that you've never gained some sort of legacy from!

Lennox Lewis stopped Mike Tyson in the eighth round of their 2002 unified heavyweight world title fight

"Don't get me wrong I completely understand you whooped Tyson's a**.

"But let's face it... that Tyson..."

In response, Lewis tweeted: "Mike could have fought me when he was the champ and I was the mandatory No. 1 contender.

"There was nothing but air and opportunity at the time."

Lewis recently teased that he could come back for one more against Tyson one last time before they both get too old to wear the gloves again.

And he also revealed that he somehow managed to keep the ring that they fought in all those years ago - despite the canvas still being covered in the blood of his former mortal enemy.

Reflecting on the fight on its 20th anniversary, he posted: “On this day in 2002, I stopped Mike Tyson in the eighth round to retain my WBC, IBO, Ring, and Lineal [heavyweight championship].

“I knew I couldn’t retire without making this fight happen but due to the Don King ‘politricks’ of the time, I couldn’t make it happen when Tyson was champ and I was the number 1 contender, so I made it happen when I was the champ.

“At the presser to announce that Lewis Tyson is on, Tyson threw a punch at my bodyguard that started a brawl. In the chaos, Tyson bit me on my leg and just that quickly, Lewis Tyson was off!

“The boxing commissions in Nevada and New York refused to let Tyson fight there and after a lot of wheeling and dealing, Lewis Tyson is on again in Memphis, TN.

“It made history at the time as the highest grossing fight of all time and still remains the highest grossing heavyweight fight of all time.

“We both were at the end of our careers, I only fought one more time before retiring, I think Mike fought a few more before hanging up the gloves himself, but I think we both gave a good account and finally gave the public what they had been wanting to see for many years.

“I still have the ring we fought in in storage. Maybe I’ll dust it off one day.”
