Joe Gomez has had absolutely no luck with injuries during his time at Liverpool.

Just four months after he arrived at the Merseyside club from Charlton Athletic in June 2015, the defender picked up a season-ending ACL injury while playing for England's Under-21 side.

Then in December of 2018, when he was first-choice under Jurgen Klopp, Gomez suffered a fractured leg following a rash tackle by Burnley's Ben Mee.

He didn't return to action until April the following year, although the 25-year-old managed to rediscover something close to his best form in Liverpool's title-winning 2019/20 campaign.

But in 2020/21, the Gomez curse struck again. While on international duty with England in November of 2020, he was struck down with a tendon injury to his left knee.

Ever since then, Gomez has found playing time hard to come by at Liverpool, particularly after the signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig last summer.

Last season, he was restricted to just 21 appearances across all competitions, with only eight of them coming in the Premier League.

It's been tough going for Gomez, but Liverpool fans continue to have enormous faith in the versatile defender and want him to remain at the club for the foreseeable future.

Well, judging by recent footage of Gomez in training, it's easy to see why Kopites are sticking by their man.

In the video uploaded to social media, the Englishman looks like a player reborn as he bosses the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz during various drills.

If he can remain fit for he majority of next season, Liverpool's depth at centre-back will be insanely good.

Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Konate and Gomez as options? Yeah, that's ridiculous and possibly the best quartet in the position available to a single team in Premier League history.

Gomez really is the perfect modern day centre-back. He has pace befitting of a winger, is tall enough to win most aerial duels, can shrug off most strikers with his strength and can play the ball out from the back.

He recently signed a contract extension at Liverpool until 2027, which certainly made Klopp a very happy man.

“Joe is an outstanding talent. He is also an outstanding defender and an outstanding human being,” the manager said after the news was made official.

“He has so many qualities, I could talk about them all day. So knowing that he will continue his journey with us is a massive boost – one that everyone who loves Liverpool FC and cares about its present and future should be unbelievably happy about.

“One of the many wonderful things about Joe is he has experience and youth – that’s not a bad combination. He has not long turned 25 but he was at the club before I was and I think after Hendo and Millie he is our longest-serving player. Incredible.

“But the best thing of all is that his best years are still to come and I could not be happier that this will happen with us.”
