Emma Raducanu could be faced with a devastating drop in ranking as a result of her difficult post-US Open period.

The British number one has struggled to replicate her blistering form showcased at Flushing Meadows and now risks plummeting to as far as 96th in the world.

Since her historic triumph, she has failed to make it beyond the quarter-final of a tournament as has won just nine matches in 2022.

Raducanu ranking danger

Raducanu is in danger of losing up to 2040 ranking points before she returns to New York to defend her title in two months' time.

This is because of the rolling 12-month periods in which the tennis ranking systems work, meaning the Brit could face a hefty fall before she's even returned to the US Open stage.

She currently has 2717 points — mostly accumulated from her maiden Grand Slam triumph last year.

However, this could all be set to change over the coming months.

Raducanu is also currently defending points from her run at the ITF $100,000 event in Pennsylvania and WTA Chicago 125, both held in August.

The Brit reached the quarter-final and final of these tournaments respectively in 2021 and if she fails to defend the points won, she could drop to as far as 123rd in the world.

It's not all negative news for the British number one, though. She still has the opportunity to bank some important points before she returns to the US Open.

Raducanu will make her debut at the Citi Open in Washington at the end of the month, followed by the Canadian and Cincinnati Masters in August. She could claim as many as 1000 ranking points in each tournament.

Defending her US Open title

Since winning the US Open title in 2021, all eyes have been on what Raducanu will do next. However, her Grand Slam form has been a shadow of what she achieved in New York.

Raducanu breezed past every single opponent during the competition, without dropping a single set. Including her three qualifying matches, she stunned the world after winning ten consecutive matches to claim the title.

Her successful run made her the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam and as a result, she skyrocketed through the world rankings.

When the Bromley tennis star made her WTA Tour debut in June 2021, she was ranked 366th in the world. After competing at the Nottingham Open, Wimbledon, and other tournaments in the lead up to Flushing Meadows, Raducanu had risen to 150th, before her historic Grand Slam title win catapulted her just outside the top 20.

Since then, she has steadily climbed the table before she reached an all-time high of world number 10, where she is currently ranked.

At the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon, Raducanu was dealt early defeats. She crashed out in the second round of each competition and has also struggled with multiple injuries over the course of the year.
