Newcastle United still have Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the top of their wishlist this summer at St James’ Park, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe is strengthening his side this summer ahead of the 2022-23 campaign and more money could still be spent before the September deadline passes.

What is the latest transfer news from Newcastle?

The Magpies have been busy this summer but not quite as busy as some may have suspected given their enormous financial assets.

Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman have all made the permanent move to the North East ahead of the new campaign with the club seemingly eager not to behave too rashly in the window.

But it seems likely that a lot more money will be spent on Howe’s side before the deadline passes.

Attacking reinforcements appear to be next on the agenda. Despite signing Chris Wood in the January window, there appears to be a desire to upgrade in the position once again.

Lucas Paqueta, Memphis Depay and Armando Broja have all been linked with moves to Newcastle this summer.

But according to Jones, it is Calvert-Lewin who remains top of their wish-list this summer, with Everton valuing the forward at £60 million.

What has Jones said on the race for Calvert-Lewin?

Jones reports that the 25-year-old remains the top choice among those in charge of Newcastle as new season closes in.

But he also states that the opening bid could be crucial, with Everton already losing Richarlison only increasing the importance of Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Calvert-Lewin is still the guy that they would love to lead their attack. Obviously, we haven't seen a an aggressive push to sign him at this point. I think they're trying to get the kind of figures into place that might convince Everton to do business. They know they don't want to sell the player. So you're going to have to put forward a good offer from day one, if it's going to happen.”

Would Calvert-Lewin be a good signing?

It is easy to see why Newcastle are targeting the Toffees’ talisman this summer. Calvert-Lewin is built in a similar mould to Wood but comes with a much higher ceiling.

In 190 appearances for Everton he has scored 58 goals and provided 18 assists. The 2020-21 campaign was his most productive to date, bagging 21 times in all competitions and earning a call-up to England’s Euro 2020 squad.

However, he suffered badly with injury problems last term and made just 17 Premier League appearances, scoring five goals.
