Boxing sensation Gennady Golovkin has explained why he expects Canelo Alvarez to be stronger following his defeat to Dmitry Bivol.

Prior to May 7 of this year, Canelo Alvarez was on an incredible run of form that saw him win multiple world titles and defeat some of the toughest challenges he’s had to date. The Mexican star was running with his ‘dare to be great’ ideology and, for the most part, it led to widespread joy and success.

Unfortunately for the 32-year-old that run came to an end at T-Mobile Arena when he came face to face with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

The size discrepancy, combined with a world class performance from the champ, led to Canelo falling to a unanimous decision defeat in Sin City.

As opposed to getting an immediate rematch, though, he’ll instead be getting back into the ring on September 17 to face an old rival in the form of Gennady Golovkin.

The two men have met before with Canelo taking one win and the other fight being dubbed a draw, leaving the trilogy to help us determine who the better man really is.

During a recent interview with BoxingScene.com, GGG gave his thoughts on Canelo’s loss to Bivol and where it leaves him heading into their third encounter.

“I’ve watched some highlights of some fights but I’m not following [Alvarez] and thinking about him. It’s not on my radar,” Golovkin said.

“I know a lot of people do not believe me, but I did not watch the fight live or after. I did watch the highlights. There were no surprises for me. Bivol was Bivol. Canelo was Canelo. It was a good day for Bivol, and it was not a good day for Alvarez.

“You learn from losses. We’re at the level that a loss can only make you stronger. I think it’s good for Canelo because that loss kind of brought him back to reality. He will make the right conclusions from that fight to be a better boxer.”
