West Ham United performed a u-turn in choosing to pursue the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt full-back Filip Kostic, according to transfer insider Dean Jones

David Moyes is preparing his side for the 2022-23 campaign and a new reinforcement could well be on the cards in the form of the versatile left-winger.

What is the latest on West Ham’s pursuit of Kostic?

According to talkSPORT, West Ham submitted a bid of £15 million to Frankfurt for the 29-year-old on Friday.

Kostic has reportedly been identified as an alternative to Hoffenheim’s David Raum who is set to join RB Leipzig this summer.

With just one year left on his contract in Frankfurt, West Ham have seemingly sniffed out the opportunity to bag a bargain this summer with Kostic potentially available for a cut-price deal.

The reports came shortly after it emerged the Hammers had had a £35.5 million bid for Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca accepted.

What has Jones said on West Ham’s interest in Kostic?

Jones insists that the Hammers’ interest in Kostic has come as a surprise, saying that the club were previously targeting a more defence-minded option.

The insider speculates that there may well have been a u-turn performed by those in charge at the London Stadium after the latest reports emerged.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Yeah, the momentum around it has definitely built and it's been quite a strange one because I was told that David Moyes wanted a more defensive minded player in that position. Kostic didn't really seem to be somebody they were going to move forward to and, suddenly, there's been a U-turn on it and it's really moved forward.”

Why are West Ham chasing a deal for Kostic?

The winger has an excellent record in the final third, providing seven goals and 15 assists for Frankfurth in the 2021-22 campaign.

It is no surprise he has caught the attention of Moyes either after Kostic impressed across both legs of the Europa League semi-final between the Germans and West Ham.

In total he has found the net 35 times and provided 67 assists in 169 appearances, but he could soon be on the move to the English capital.

Moyes currently only has the services of Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku to call upon at left-back and Kostic could provide an option that would allow them to play with wing-backs when necessary with greater ease.
