Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk 2: Predictions and picks

Worrying update for AJ from Ukrainian's training camp

Just a few weeks remain until the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua 2 boxing fight, which will see Joshua get his rematch following the massive bout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in 2021.

On 25th September 2021, Usyk became the new IBF, IBO, WBO, and WBA heavyweight champion after defeating the British megastar at Spurs’ ground.

Joshua will head to the Jeddah Super Dome in Saudi Arabia on August 20th, 2022 in an attempt to claim what he believes is rightfully his, but what are our picks and predictions for this massive fight night for the British star?

Here are our predictions and picks for the Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk 2 fight night from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, August 20th 2022.

Since 2018, Usyk has started to engage in less boxing activity, only fighting once a year, with the most recent match taking place just before the fight with Joshua. This is more than understandable given that Usyk is already 35 years old and that he recently served in the Ukrainian militia.

Additionally, he needed permission from his country’s minister of sports to compete in this fight, which will put his titles and undefeated record to the test. Will Usyk have enough time to prepare to be fully prepared for this rematch?

The Ukrainian will have to showcase it in the ring, however, a knockout may not be the best strategy given that Usyk won his most recent two matches by unanimous decision, which also serves as evidence of his dominance in both contests.

Similarly, Joshua hasn’t fought since their last encounter. He’s eager for this rematch to clear his name after getting outpunched by 148 to 123 in the first encounter.

After his defeat to Usyk, Anthony Joshua reportedly acted quickly to invoke the rematch clause, even though the fight’s date had been postponed due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Joshua will need to reconsider his approach, though, given both of his career defeats have occurred in his previous four fights. As a result, Joshua’s preparation for this match must be flawless if he hopes to leave Saudi Arabia with a strong reputation in the heavyweight division.

Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk 2 Predictions

Usyk has put up fantastic performances in his most recent fights, and we think the rematch will be another opportunity for him to teach a lesson in boxing.

In recent years, Anthony Joshua has been struggling. The 32-year-old Englishman will also have to prove that he still has the talents he previously had by getting the job done in the rematch.

Joshua was widely expected to defeat Usyk in their first encounter, with many anticipating a knockout victory for the British fighter. Many have come together to discuss who they believe will gain victory in this return match between AJ and Usyk, and the odds seem to be in AJ’s favour.

Although the odds for the rematch have not yet been set, given Usyk’s overwhelming performance in the first fight, we anticipate him to be the slight favourite heading into this huge rematch.

Tyson Fury, the WBC champion, has spoken on the significant fight this summer saying that Usyk will be ‘too cute’ for Anthony Joshua when the heavyweight rivals collide for a second time in Saudi Arabia.

We’re predicting however that this will be a renewed Joshua who comes to the fore in Jeddah, and he will be looking to assert his dominance early in the rematch.

Usyk has already proven to be a master of technical ability in the sweet science, so Joshua will have to attempt to score a TKO/KO against the tenured fighter because it’s not likely that he could genuinely outbox him.

Here are our two picks/predictions for the most likely outcomes for the mega bout:

  • Joshua wins via TKO/KO in the first 5 rounds
  • Usyk will take another win via unanimous decision.

You could say that we’re sitting on the fence with this one, and to be fair, we probably are!
