Everton will be making a 'weird signing' if they opt to lure Wolverhampton Wanderers defensive midfielder Leander Dendoncker to Goodison Park, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

The Toffees have only welcomed James Tarkowski to Merseyside since the transfer window reopened, but boss Frank Lampard has until September 1 to secure further reinforcements.

What's the latest news involving Dendoncker?

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Everton are in the market for a midfielder and Dendoncker is on Lampard's shortlist of targets.

It is understood that Lampard, who was appointed as the Toffees' boss in January, and the hierarchy are admirers of the 27-year-old and a move is being explored.

Everton have reportedly held initial talks over Dendoncker, although a move has failed to develop so far.

The 29-cap Belgium international is facing an uncertain future as he has entered the final 12 months of his £90,000-per-week contract at Wolves.

However, his current employers have the option of extending the agreement by a further year, meaning the 2022/23 campaign may not necessarily be his final season at Molineux if he fails to secure a move away.

What has Ryan Taylor said about Dendoncker?

Taylor believes Dendoncker would be a strange addition to Everton's squad because he would not add greater quality to the Toffees' midfield.

However, the journalist feels Wolves are willing to listen to offers for the Belgian as he is not one of the first names on head coach Bruno Lage's team-sheet.

Taylor told GIVEMESPORT: "I think Dendoncker would be a bit of a weird signing, to be honest. I'm not sure he would improve them massively, but it's vintage Everton in a way.

"I do think Wolves will be open to offloading him because he's not a regular starter."

Why is Dendoncker of interest to Everton?

Kevin Thelwell was appointed as Everton's director of football in February and it is likely that he is particularly keen to sign Dendoncker.

That is because he previously held a similar role at Wolves and hailed the defensive midfielder as 'terrific', underlining that he rates Dendoncker highly.

The fact he has made 120 appearances in the Premier League will be another attraction for Everton as it means he will not need time to adjust to the rigours of the English top flight.

Statistics show Dendoncker was in the 92nd percentile for blocks among Premier League midfielders last season, so he could add further steel to the Toffees.
