Real Madrid: Antonio Rudiger sends Luka Modric flying with training tackle

Rudiger in action for Germany

Antonio Rudiger has wasted no time getting stuck in with his new teammates at Real Madrid.

The German defender signed for Los Blancos this summer on a free transfer, following the expiry of his contract at Chelsea after five years at Stamford Bridge.

Upon linking up with his new colleagues in pre-season, he made headlines for a crunching challenge he left on fellow former Chelsea star Eden Hazard in a training session. Rudiger has since claimed another victim.

The 29-year-old is at his best when applying his physically imposing and unrelenting game onto attackers, in order to keep things watertight at the back.

Following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Chelsea, Rudiger blossomed and found a stride of consistency that saw him look every part a world class defender. It was no surprise to see Real swooping in to snap him up for free when his Chelsea contract was running out.

Real have signed an all-action, imposing yet modern central defender in Rudiger, with the German also handy with the ball at his feet. But if there were any doubts from Carlo Ancelotti over his new defender’s commitment to the cause, those were well and truly quashed yet again in training.

Footage has surfaced of Rudiger absolutely clattering Luka Modric, following on from the tackle he left on Hazard previously. And by clattering, we mean he absolutely cleaned through Modric without thought.

Words don’t do it justice, so be sure to take a look for yourself below.

It appears to be ingrained in Rudiger to never pull out of a challenge, because he never looked like taking it easy on Modric.

The moment his eyes locked onto that ball, the Croatian’s days were numbered. Rudiger sends him bundling down like a pack of cards. Truly extraordinary strength.

But it’s not just the show of strength that’s impressive. Rudiger’s challenge – while sending another teammate flying – is actually a very clean one and sees him get all of the ball, too.

One thing’s for sure; Rudiger certainly doesn’t lack commitment or desire. In fact, it’s fair to say he’s got it in abundance.

It’s hard to envisage a world where Ancelotti is particularly pleased to see his new defender sending a 36-year-old Modric bundling to the floor like a ragdoll like that, but he’ll at least be impressed with the effort put in, with one eye on the coming season.

Let’s just hope that commitment to the cause doesn’t result in a costly injury to one of Los Blancos’ star players mere weeks away from the start of their 2022/23 campaign, where they will be defending both the Champions League and La Liga.
