Manchester United signing Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries would make sense, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 26-year-old is currently being linked with a move to Old Trafford, and Jones can understand why the Red Devils would target him.

What is the latest news involving Dumfries?

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreInter) recently claimed that United and Chelsea could both go head-to-head to sign Dumfries this summer.

According to the Italian outlet, the two Premier League sides are interested in the right-back, who could cost around €40m (£33.6m).

Dumfries joined Inter from PSV Eindhoven last year and enjoyed a successful debut campaign at the San Siro.

In total, the Dutchman made 45 appearances and helped his side to win the Coppa Italia after they defeated rivals Juventus 4-2 at the Stadio Olimpico back in May.

What has Jones said about Dumfries and United?

Jones thinks Dumfries would be a good fit for the set-up Erik ten Hag is trying to employ at United.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: "Dumfries, I think that's rattled a few people in Italy, the way that it's being reported so far, but it would make sense in terms of the set-up that Man United are looking at."

Why do United and Chelsea both want Dumfries?

Right-back could soon become a problem area for United and Chelsea, if it is not already.

Reports suggest that the former could move Aaron Wan-Bissaka on this summer, while the latter are at risk of losing Cesar Azpilicueta to Barcelona.

It would leave both clubs light in that right-back position, so it is no surprise to see them being linked with Dumfries, who could be "perfect" for the Premier League, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Going forward, the Netherlands international is an extremely good full-back and wing-back. As per FBref, he has ranked in the 99th percentile for non-penalty expected goals and the 99th percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area among his positional peers over the last year, showing the kind of threat he brings to the pitch.

For less than £35m, he could be a shrewd addition to either United or Chelsea's squad this summer.

A lot could depend on what happens with Wan-Bissaka and Azpilicueta, but if the two English giants do find themselves in the market looking for a new right-back, then they could certainly do a lot worse than Dumfries.
