Manchester City have spent huge sums of money since being taken over by Sheikh Mansour and the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.

Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez and Erling Haaland are just a handful of names that have joined the club in massive deals in recent years.

Their spending has seen them become one of the world's best clubs. While they haven't won the Champions League, they are always in the latter stages and have been crowned English champions six times since 2012.

They aren't the only club that have spent huge amounts of money in the 21st century, though.

While Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United have all spent great amounts of money since 2000. In Barca's case, they have spent so much that they are now in great financial difficulty.

Transfermarkt have created a fascinating live graphic that shows the highest spending clubs in the 21st century.

The graphic starts in 2000, with Italian clubs dominating the highest spending clubs in the world.

Chelsea, taken over by Roman Abramovich in 2003, soon vault to the top of the standings but are overtaken by Real Madrid a few years later.

The Spanish club become the first team to spend over €1 billion in 2009.

Real are overtaken by Chelsea and Man City, with Barca and Juve also going above Los Blancos in recent years.

Chelsea top the standings having spent a crazy €2.537 billion since 2000. They could extend their lead should they compete the signing of Jules Kounde this summer.

Barca have spent €2.34 billion in the 21st century and are now in financial turmoil. Despite their struggles, they are continuing to splash the cash, with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha among their summer arrivals.

Man United miss out on the top five, while Liverpool have spent the ninth most of any club in the 21st century.

Perhaps surprisingly, PSG are the eighth highest spenders in the 21st century, having spent €1.76 billion. That's nearly €800m less than Chelsea.
