Newcastle United 'have enquired' about signing Leeds United winger Jack Harrison but are unwilling to pay over the odds as they look to strike a deal at St James' Park, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

Eddie Howe is preparing for his first full season at the helm, having been appointed as the Magpies' head coach last November, and it seems Harrison is firmly on his radar.

What's the latest news involving Harrison?

Newcastle have strengthened their interest in Harrison by testing the waters with an £18million bid.

However, the opening gambit did not go down well in Yorkshire as Leeds adjudged it to be a derisory offer and rejected the proposal out of hand.

It is understood that Harrison's current employers would only entertain sanctioning his departure if a bid worth in the region of £35million is tabled.

Although the winger appeared to raise suspicions that a move away from Elland Road could be on the cards by claiming ‘we’ll see what happens’ after being questioned over his future, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has insisted that Harrison is a ‘big part’ of his plans.

Newcastle are not the 25-year-old's only suitors as Tottenham Hotspur are also admirers ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline.

What has Ben Jacobs said about Harrison?

Jacobs understands that Newcastle are courting Harrison, but warns their valuation of the wide-man falls some way short of his price tag.

The journalist believes the Magpies are mulling over whether to return to Leeds with another bid, although they do not want to fork out more than they feel is his true value.

Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT: "Newcastle have enquired about Jack Harrison. That does tell you that, alongside a young, hot talent, they are also considering a bit more of a proven Premier League product.

"Newcastle are thinking of £20million to £25million if they're to proceed and Leeds are holding out for £35million-plus.

"I don't think that Newcastle, even though they are still considering that move, will pay above the odds. That's the challenge. Newcastle are being very sensible and they're getting quoted, at times, fees that are considerably above market."

What would Harrison add to Newcastle's squad?

Harrison - who has been hailed as 'exciting to watch' by former Leeds midfielder David Norris - showed last season that he is capable of being a menace in the final third of the pitch as he found the back of the net 10 times and registered a further two assists in 38 appearances.

As no-one in Newcastle's squad managed to get into double figures for goals during the 2021/22 campaign, it is clear that Harrison's firepower would be of huge benefit.

FBref statistics show the Leeds man was in the 96th and 90th percentiles for low passes and crosses among wingers in the Premier League last season, emphasising his composure on the ball and reliability when in possession.
