The internet has been reacting to news surrounding Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and the reason he won’t be 100% as training camp begins.

In what is one of the final stages of the preseason before we move on to actual games, teams have this week begun reporting for training camp as they look to hone their skills ahead of the preseason games that are coming in the middle of August ahead of the start of the regular season in September.

One player who is really going to be looking forward to this season is Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick who will enter it as the highest-paid safety in the history of the NFL after he agreed a new contract that will see him earn a reported $73.6m and more.

However his preparation for the season is set to take a little bit of a hiatus as it was revealed yesterday that he will be absent from the first stages of training camp after suffering a rather weird injury during the offseason whilst away from the team.

What’s he done?

Speaking during a press conference yesterday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that the 25-year-old will be absent after suffering an injury whilst riding his bike:

Now if you look all around the NFL, there are a number of players who will be absent from the first stages for various reasons, some will be due to injury whilst in the case of New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu he will be absent due to personal reasons, however the news on Fitzpatrick certainly enters the ‘weird’ realm when it comes to reasons for being away.

Tomlin didn’t give any further details with regards to how long he will be out for or how the injury happened, which means we can only be left to speculate on the details, which is kind of half the fun.

The internet piles on his misery

And fun is exactly what the internet had when they found out the news, with many of them mocking the idea of him falling off his bike, whilst others speculated whether that injury was real or if it was just a cover-up for something else:

Fitzpatrick isn’t expected to be out for too long, with Tomlin stating he “does not anticipate the injury being a long-term problem, just some discomfort”, but it does still offer us something to chuckle at as we begin to get closer to actual football being played.
