Crystal Palace are unlikely to sign a new striker if Christian Benteke remains at the club, says Tom Barclay of The Sun.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, and Barclay thinks the Eagles will only sign a centre-forward if that transfer materialises.

What is the latest transfer news involving Palace?

According to The Sun, Wolves want to sign Benteke after sending Fabio Silva out on loan.

As per The Telegraph, the Midlands club are also set to start the season without Raul Jimenez after he picked up an injury, making their need for a new No.9 an even more pressing one.

In regards to incomings at Selhurst Park, there has been a lot of talk about Palace being interested in one of Wolves' players, Morgan Gibbs-White.

The Guardian recently reported that the south London outfit are trying to prise the attacking midfielder away from Molineux.

What has Barclay said about Palace's transfer plans?

From what Barclay understands, Palace will not sign a new striker unless someone like Benteke departs.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, The Sun journalist said: "[Jean-Philippe] Mateta became very much the main man having looked like he wasn't going to sign permanently and, you know, there was obviously interest in [Eddie] Nketiah until he re-signed at Arsenal.

"What I'm hearing is that Palace are probably not going to try and sign another striker unless a player like Benteke leaves."

Should Palace sell Benteke this summer?

Benteke is on huge money at Selhurst Park - £120,000 a week salary sport claims - and was only a bit-part player last season.

In total, the Belgium international made just 11 starts in the Premier League under Patrick Vieira, with practically all of those coming in the first half of the 2021/22 campaign.

For whatever reason, Benteke evidently lost Vieira's trust as the season went on, with the Arsenal legend preferring Mateta, who managed a couple more starts than his team-mate.

He has now entered the final 12 months of the two-year contract he signed last June, so this could be Palace's last opportunity to make a decent bit of money from him.

Who they could replace the ex-Liverpool striker with is unclear, though, with Nketiah no longer an option following the 23-year-old's decision to sign that extension at Arsenal.

Nevertheless, if a good offer for Benteke comes in before the transfer window shuts, Palace should probably consider it given all of the above.
