The Premier League has some of the most passionate fans in all of sport.

It's pretty hard to watch a single game in England's top-flight without the television director cutting to a shot of a topless middle-aged man screaming his lungs out every 10 minutes.

It was never clearer than during the COVID-19 pandemic just how much the in-ground supporters were missed, reiterating that the cauldron-like atmospheres rustled up in Premier League stadia play a huge role in what makes the competition great.

Atmosphere in the Premier League

Nevertheless, anyone who has ever traversed the English game and stood in the terraces of several arenas will vouch for the fact that, well, some grounds offer better atmospheres than others.

While there's not a single stadium in English football that isn't populated with incredibly passionate individuals, that alone doesn't guarantee that there will be a spine-tingling aura on match day.

It's not for no reason, for example, that stadiums like St. James' Park and Anfield stir an immediate reverence in the hearts of fans that you just don't get when you mention the Pirelli Stadium or Ricoh Arena.

It's a reality of the sport that can come down to a variety of reasons ranging from the history of the club to the town or city's population and the architecture of the stadium to the team's recent performances.

Premier League stadiums ranked by atmosphere

However, no matter what the reason might be, the moral of the story is that there are certain grounds that you just know will produce an away day for the ages, and some that will only disappoint.

So, bearing that in mind, we decided to take a look at which Premier League grounds fans consider to have the best atmospheres of all by checking out the reviews over on footballgroundmap.com.

A one-stop-shop for the loveable footballing tradition of totting up which stadiums you've been to, it also provides a platform for supporters to cast their opinions on everything from a ground's food to its atmosphere.

And they rather handily have a list of the 'Best atmosphere in the Premier League' to hand with each 2022/23 club and stadium ranked from worst to best 'based on the rating supplied by our users'.

Naturally, the results are bound to spark debate amongst the fans that rustle up the atmospheres themselves, so be sure to check out where your team places in the standings down below:

Victory for Newcastle

Well, well, well.

Let's start with what's less surprising: the homes of Arsenal and West Ham continue to be maligned for their ambience at home, while Anfield and Elland Road are typically heralded for their rapturous supporters.

However, the list certainly isn't without its controversy because United fans will no doubt be having a meltdown about the fact the so-called 'Emptyhad' is considered to have a better atmosphere than Old Trafford.

It's also a little head-scratching that Brentford's new ground, while stunning, is said to have more get up and go than monuments of the English game like Anfield, Villa Park and Goodison Park.

But it's the Toon who take first place with their atmosphere at the cathedral-like St. James' Park having only gone through the roof since the widely-criticised Mike Ashley era finally came to a close.

If you're still unhappy with the results, though, and you just so happen to be passing through the turnstiles of one of these teams each week, then be sure to put some extra gusto into your chants and you might just see your ground rise up the ranks.

Then again, West Ham fans are sort of on a hiding to nothing at the Olympic Stadium...
