Newcastle United have had Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin on their transfer radar for a long time, and the deal is ‘one to watch’ over the coming weeks, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

Eddie Howe is continuing to put his mark on the Magpies ahead of the summer transfer window deadline on September 1 and there could still be a big name arrival to come.

What is the latest from Newcastle in the transfer window?

It has not been the wild, free-spending summer that many probably expected from the North East giants this summer after they were bought by the Saudia Arabian Public Investment Fund last season.

Instead, only two new recruits have arrived at St James’ Park in the form of Nick Pope from Burnley and Sven Botman from Lille. Matt Targett has also made his loan move from Aston Villa permanent.

A new striker also appears to remain high on Howe’s wishlist before the deadline passes on September 1.

The likes of Duvan Zapata, Armando Broja and Calvert-Lewin have all been linked with a switch to the North East as the club looks to bolster their attacking options following the January arrival of Chris Wood.

What has Jacobs said about a potential Calvert-Lewin move?

Jacobs understands that the 25-year-old has been under consideration at St James’ Park for some time and that a summer deal cannot be ruled out.

However, the reporter added that after Richarlison’s move to Tottenham, any attempt to prise Calvert-Lewin from Everton’s grasp will be all the tougher.

Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT: “Calvert-Lewin has been a player historically on Newcastle's radar but they've not moved at this point and Everton are probably trying to keep him now that Richarlison has gone to Spurs. [It’s] one to watch, though, during the window.”

Why have Newcastle targeted Calvert-Lewin this summer?

It would appear that bringing in a more reliable presence in attack is a top priority for Newcastle this summer.

While Wood and Callum Wilson remain at the club, neither have proven to be particularly reliable on the goalscoring front. The former found the net just twice in 16 appearances last season and while Wilson has bagged 20 times in 46 games, injuries have plagued his time in Newcastle.

Calvert-Lewin, who is currently earning £75,000 per week at Goodison Park, has scored 58 goals in 190 games and would be a perfect fit for the lone-striker role that Eddie Howe seems to prefer.

Carlo Ancelotti previously sang the praises of the marksman too, telling Sky Sports after Everton's 1-0 win over West Ham in 2021: "The goal he scored today is a goal of a top striker."
