Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has pulled off an incredible catch during his first day of training camp with his new team.

JuJu Smith-Schuster is set for a new chapter in his life this season, as after five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he has joined up with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he is already making quite the impression with his new teammates as he looks to bounce back.

Despite being something of a phenom in his first few years in the league, things took a downturn starting in the 2020 season, putting up 2,895 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns in his first three years, Smith-Schuster arguably became more famous as a result of his activity on social media before games, something that rubbed Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin up the wrong way and ultimately led to the receiver dropping the activities from his pre-game routine.

Last season was certainly one of immense disappointment for him as he looked to become known more for his play on the field, but he could only rack up 129 receiving yards across the opening five games before suffering a severe injury that kept him out until the playoffs.

A great second chance

Those injuries and performance levels ultimately led the Steelers to get rid of him this past offseason and he moved to the Kansas City Chiefs, signing with them on a one-year deal that could see him earn as much as $10.75m, but more than that could really give his football career a boost.

The Chiefs lost their main wide receiver in Tyreek Hill in a trade with the Miami Dolphins and whilst they do still have some impressive offensive weapons like Travis Kelce, Corey Coleman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mecole Hardman, with Patrick Mahomes under center, there will be plenty of chances for him to impress the Chiefs and the league as well if he ends up looking for a new team next year.

And judging on the footage that’s emerging from training camp, he might already be going some way to making an impression already.

Going all out

In footage posted by KC Sports Network, Smith-Schuster made an incredible diving catch in order to haul in a ball thrown to him by Mahomes during a drill:

There are plenty of weapons out there for Mahomes to choose from, so Smith-Schuster will need to do all he can to stand out in these early stages, and whilst it’s obvious that he won’t always need to make those spectacular catches, he is showing that he’s willing to do all it takes to make the completion.

And that might just be enough to bump him up a spot on the receiver depth chart when the season begins.
