We all love a super-sub and Alessia Russo is officially England’s best ever, according to statistics from AceOdds

The betting calculator site have assembled a list of England’s most prolific subs from over the years and the evidence points resoundingly in Russo’s favour.

Russo has been on fire at Euro 2022 so far and has scored four times in five games. Each of these goals has come from the bench, including one against Norway, two against Northern Ireland and one against Sweden.

Her audacious backheel finish against Sweden went viral and is no doubt one of the most ‘humiliating’ goals you’ll ever wish to see.

The 23-year-old is still yet to start a game in this year’s competition, but on current form, Sarina Wiegman must be considering giving the nod to the in-form Manchester United striker.

Russo is in esteemed company when it comes to England super-subs. Who could forget Jamie Vardy’s memorable equaliser against Wales at Euro 2016, or Harry Kane’s debut goal off the bench vs Lithuania.

But as you can see from the list below, there is only one winner.

4. Michael Owen - 4 goals (0.40 goals per sub appearance)

3. Peter Crouch - 5 goals (0.22 goals per sub appearance)

Will Russo start the final?

Having made her England debut in 2020 as part of the SheBelieves Cup squad, Russo has now established herself within Wiegman’s core group of players.

In just 12 appearances for the Lionesses, she has scored eight goals –– all of which have come since the Dutch manager took over.

Yet, despite Russo’s impressive form, Ellen White remains the first-choice striker and has started every game at Euro 2022.

Russo scores for England.

White is the Lionesses' all-time top scorer with 52 and is just one away from equalling Wayne Rooney’s overall England record.

While Wiegman has stuck with White throughout the competition, she has failed to score in four of England’s five games and many have called for Russo to be given the nod on Sunday.

England are blessed with having two credible options, but Wiegman will know she has a huge decision to make, ahead of the biggest game in England’s history.
