The World Cup might be the pinnacle of the football calendar, but the Euros can be just as entertaining.

The tournament has produced a number of iconic moments – who can forget Mario Balotelli’s celebration against Germany in 2012 – and is widely anticipated by football fans around Europe.

Euro 2022 has been no different. England and Germany are the two teams left in the competition, with Sunday’s match at Wembley a repeat of the Euro 2009 final.

Germany thrashed England 6-2 back then, earning one of a record eight European titles. But England have been setting their own records during Euro 2022, some of which look set to remain in the history books for some time.

As such, GiveMeSport Women have selected eight incredible records set at the Euros that may well never be broken, across both the men and women’s tournaments.

England at Euro 2022

1. Most wins at the tournament

Germany lead the way with the most wins at the Euros, in both the men and women’s tournaments.

The women’s side has racked up 36 victories, which is unsurprising given they have won the Euros a record eight times.

Germany’s dominance in Europe has diminished in recent years, but it seems unlikely another country could catch up with their winning rate anytime soon.

For reference, the German men’s team has won 27 matches at the tournament.

2. Most minutes played

Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has played the most minutes at the Euros – a whopping 2,153.

He has also featured at the most tournaments, playing at Euro 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020.

Will we ever see a player more present at the European Championship than Ronaldo?

3. Most played final

Germany and Norway have played against each other in the final of the Women’s Euros a remarkable four times.

The two sides competed for European glory in 1989, 1991, 2005 and 2013, with Germany winning all four matches.

Maybe just as remarkably, there has never been a repeat of a final in the men’s tournament.

4. Most appearances as player and head coach

Didier Deschamps has had a stellar career as both a player and coach, and has featured at the Euros in both capacities.

In fact, he has made the most appearances at the tournament as a player and head coach, playing for France in 1992, 1996 and 2000, before standing on the touchline in 2016 and 2020.

Deschamps took France all the way to the final at Euro 2016, having triumphed as a player at Euro 2000.

5. Youngest player

With the data available to us, it appears that Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard is the youngest ever to play in a European Championship match, although his record was set during qualifying.

He was 15 years and 300 days old when he played for Norway against Bulgaria in 2016. It is very rare to see a 15-year-old play international football, so who knows when this record will be broken again.

The youngest men’s player to feature at the actual tournament is Poland’s Kacper Kozłowski, who was 17 years and 246 days, while the youngest women’s player was Ukraine’s Oksana Yakovyshyn at 16 years and 156 days.

6. Most consecutive matches without a loss

There is a pattern emerging here. The German women’s team have been incredibly dominant at the Euros, and this is yet another impressive record they hold.

Germany didn’t lose a match at the Women’s European Championship from their 4-1 victory against England in 1995, to their 3-0 win against Iceland in 2013.

That’s an unbeaten streak of 26 matches, spanning 18 years. They were finally beaten in 2013 by Norway, three days after their victory against Iceland, but still went on to win the tournament.

7. Most meetings between two teams

If a Euros match between the Italian and Spanish men’s teams feels familiar, that’s because it is.

The two sides have met seven times in the tournament, playing in 1980, 1988, 2008, 2016 and 2020, and twice in 2012.

Each team has triumphed three times each, with one group stage encounter ending as a draw.

8. Biggest win

The Lionesses smashed the record for the biggest win at a Euros when they thrashed Norway 8-0.

Beth Mead scored a hat-trick, Ellen White hit the back of the net twice, and Georgia Stanway, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo also got on the scoresheet.

The previous record-breaking victory had also been set by England, who romped their way to a 6-0 win over Scotland at Euro 2017, while there had been five men’s games won by a five-goal margin.
