Tottenham Hotspur could be 'sparked' into a transfer bid for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison by Newcastle United's failed £40m offer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

What's the latest news on James Maddison?

It has been reported by multiple sources, including Sky Sports, that Leicester have rejected a £40m bid for their star midfielder from the Magpies.

The report claims that the Foxes value Maddison at closer to £60m, but warn that King Power Stadium boss Brendan Rodgers may be determined to hold onto the England international.

Newcastle aren't the only club to have been linked with Maddison this summer; Jones and The Express journalist Ryan Taylor have both previously informed GiveMeSport of Tottenham's interest in the former Coventry and Norwich man.

In fact, Jones told GMS that Tottenham are long-term admirers of Maddison's, and have already 'touched base' with Leicester this summer regarding a potential deal.

What has Dean Jones said about James Maddison?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has revealed that Newcastle's bid for Maddison could 'spark' Tottenham into making their own offer, while suggesting the 25-year-old would be more interested in a move to Hotspur Way than St. James' Park.

Jones said: "Spurs will be watching this situation and it might spark them into a bid. I don’t think Maddison is convinced about Newcastle from what I’ve heard."

Would James Maddison be a good signing for Tottenham?

There's no doubt Maddison is a talented player. He registered 12 goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season despite Leicester enduring a disappointing campaign by their own standards, finishing in eighth place.

Tottenham also lacked goal threats outside of Harry Kane and Heung min-Son for large periods of last season. They were the only players to register more than five top flight goals for the Lilywhites.

But Spurs have arguably remedied this problem already when looking at their recruitment this summer and in January.

Mid-season arrival Dejan Kulusevski bagged five goals and eight assists in 18 Premier League outings, while Spurs signed Richarlison from Everton earlier this summer in a £60m deal. The Brazilian scored ten top flight goals last term, despite the Toffees succumbing to a relegation battle.

Then there's free signing Ivan Perisic, who registered 15 goal involvements for Inter Milan in 2021/22.

Of course, Maddison would be a handy addition to Antonio Conte's squad, but it's certainly debatable whether Tottenham truly need him.

Jones previously branded Maddison a "luxury signing" for the Lilywhites, and £60m seems like hefty price to pay for a player who wouldn't necessarily be of fundamental importance.
