Joe Aribo scored his first goal for Southampton in their pre-season clash against Villarreal on Saturday afternoon.

And what a goal it was.

Southampton fell behind in the 15th minute courtesy of Yéremy Pino’s header.

But Aribo, who signed for the club in a £10m move from Rangers this summer, restored parity in the second half with a brilliant solo goal.

The Nigerian international picked up the ball well inside his own half in the 64th minute.

Aribo, 26, proceeded to drive into Villarreal’s half and jink past a number of Villarreal players.

The Southampton midfielder kept his composure and curled the ball past Pepe Reina to score a goal that even Lionel Messi would be proud of.

What an incredible way to open your account for your new club.

Unfortunately for Aribo and Southampton, Gerard Moreno’s 72nd minute strike gave last season’s Champions League semi-finalist’s a 2-1 victory.

Aribo spoke to Southampton’s official website about his goal after the game.

Aribo said: “I was laughing with the boys inside. I said I didn’t even know where I pulled that chop on the right foot out from, but it was a really good feeling to score at home and hopefully I can take that into games to come and help the boys this season.

“It’s really important [to have scored] and hopefully I can take that momentum into the games to come.”

Speaking on the he game as a whole, he added: “I think it was a really good test and one that we needed. You could see out there that Villarreal are a very good team and are comfortable on the ball, and that’s what’s to come in games to come this season, so it was a really good test for us in pre-season to see where we’re at.

“In large spells of the game we were solid and communicating together. At times we weren’t really the best on the ball, but that’s all going to come.

“Pre-season is where you get the mistakes out and find yourselves. I think the boys stayed solid and were a good unit today.”

Aribo will be looking to be in the starting line-up when Southampton take on Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League opener on Saturday August 6.
