Toto Wolff has explained his theory behind Ferrari's surprise tyre call involving Charles Leclerc at the Hungarian GP.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was won by Max Verstappen on Sunday afternoon, with Lewis Hamilton in second and George Russell in third, with Charles Leclerc losing a potential chance at victory after a surprise tyre call from Ferrari at the second set of stops that put him on the hard tyre instead of the soft.

Indeed, that decision raised a fair few eyebrows and whilst Mattia Binotto said after the race that even on the softs Charles wouldn't have had the pace to win the Grand Prix, many still felt as though he'd have at least had a chance had they got the tyre call right.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race, however, Toto Wolff actually defended Ferrari, and said that he felt the Scuderia didn't have any other option available to them as they'd already used all their mediums earlier in the weekend:

“I think they had no option. They had only hard and soft left and for the soft it was too early. So only the hard.

“I think the mistake happened Friday, or Saturday, not to carry over a new medium.”

An interesting take from Wolff, and regardless of what you think about the call the only thing that is clear is that Leclerc now finds himself 80 points off of Max Verstappen in the world championship, as the summer break arrives.

Indeed, it's going to take a miracle for the Monegasque to turn it around now.
