The Knicks' handling of the signing of free agent Jalen Brunson has prompted the NBA to launch a tampering investigation into their actions.

The league is investigating if the point guard was contacted by the Knicks before the opening of free agency. 

One of the worst-kept secrets in the NBA coming up to free agency was that Brunson was leaving Dallas for the Knicks. Among the many connections, the 25-year-old has to the Knicks is the hiring of his father Rick as an assistant coach this offseason.

The Knicks have so far refused to make Brunson available to the media, causing many people to believe that they did so in order to protect him from accusations of tampering.

Jalen Brunson is under investigation for tampering

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the NBA has launched a tampering inquiry into the free-agent pursuit and signing of point guard Jalen Brunson by the New York Knicks. The league will investigate if the Knicks contacted Brunson before the start of the free-agent period, according to Haynes.

There were rumours that New York would be interested in Brunson before he agreed to the four-year, $104 million contract he now has with the Knicks.

NBA reporter Marc Stein stated on June 24 that the Knicks were "increasingly expected to build a four-year offer to Brunson worth in the $100 million level," six days before the start of the league's permissible tampering period on June 30.

Days later, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN claimed the Knicks intended to extend Brunson a four-year, $110 million contract. Tim MacMahon of ESPN followed up that report with one like it:

This offseason, the Knicks also signed Rick Brunson, the son of Brunson, as an assistant coach. Tom Thibodeau and Brunson previously collaborated as assistant coaches for the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves, respectively.

According to Haynes, Brunson was only supposed to meet with New York during his free agency even though he was supposed to visit other teams as well. This is because the Knicks made many transactions this offseason to free up enough financial room to offer Brunson a contract.

There are other teams being looked for tampering in addition to the Knicks. The Philadelphia 76ers were reportedly under investigation by the NBA on Friday for possible tampering in the re-signing of James Harden and their pursuit of free agents P.J. Tucker and Danuel House.
