Tottenham are not currently interested in signing Leicester star James Maddison, according to The Athletic reporter Charlie Eccleshare.

The north Londoners have already secured the services of six players this summer, but Antonio Conte is still hoping to make further additions before the window closes on 1 September.

It's been a productive window for Spurs, who have welcomed Fraser Forster, Djed Spence, Clement Lenglet, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Richarlison, but they're yet to bring in a creative attacker.

However, according to reports, Tottenham are 'seriously considering' a move for Maddison, who's future at Leicester is in doubt with less than two years remaining on his deal.

Spurs face competition for the England international, though, with Newcastle, who've seen two bids rejected, pushing hard to sign the ex-Norwich City ace, who was described as 'sensational' by Brendan Rodgers.

Per the Daily Mail, Leicester have set a £60m asking price for Maddison, and Eccleshare has urged Tottenham to make their move if they're serious about bringing the midfielder to north London.

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Spurs say they're not going after James Maddison and obviously we're seeing Newcastle step up their interest, so I guess if Spurs are interested, now would be the time to show their hand."

Do Tottenham need Maddison?

On paper, many might look at the potential signing of Maddison and ask, where would he fit into Conte's plans?

Since becoming Tottenham manager, the Italian has predominantly gone with a 3-4-3, which doesn't favour a no.10.

Therefore, why would Conte potentially spend £60m, which would be amongst their most expensive ever signings, on a player who's not even guaranteed to be in his starting XI.

Bringing him Maddison would potentially force both Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski to drop out of the side, which would be slightly surprising considering the former recently cost around £60m while the latter ended last season in outstanding form following his January move from Juventus.

But Tottenham are yet to replace Christian Eriksen and while they have plenty of talented attacking options, they're still lacking a genuine creative player beyond Harry Kane.

That's where Maddison would come into play. He would not only add incredible depth to the squad, but he would give them that extra dimension, with the possibility of playing behind Son and Kane a mouth-watering one.
