Euro 2022: Arsenal fan sets up fundraiser to sign England star from Man City

England celebrate winning Euro 2022

England have propelled themselves into the spotlight after their history-making summer at Euro 2022.

New fans now know who all the players are and long-time supporters are prouder than ever of what the team has achieved.

Everyone who played under Sarina Wiegman at the tournament wowed the nation and turned plenty of heads in their direction.

Before the 2022/23 Women’s Super League season starts, there will no doubt be some interesting summer transfers off the back of the European tournament.

But it seems even unofficial business is also trying to come to fruition.

One Arsenal fan has clearly been thinking ahead and has put together a plan to try and swipe Lauren Hemp from Manchester City this summer.

The supporter in question — named Ghost of an Arsenal Fan on Twitter — has started a fundraising page in an attempt to pool together enough money to sign the Lioness. However, it seems the page has since been taken down, but a screenshot on Twitter still exists.

The fan has even changed their Twitter profile picture to an image of Hemp holding the Euro 2022 trophy.

“Our American overlords won’t sign Hempo so we gotta do it ourselves,” the description of the GoFundMe campaign reads.

The target is set at £500,000, and while it is of course all a tongue-in-cheek joke aimed at Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke to advise him to spend money, it is certainly one way to try and get some summer business done.

As it stands, Pernille Harder is the world’s most expensive female player. She joined Chelsea in 2020 for a record fee in the region of £250,000-£300,000.

If the hypothetical GoFundMe target was reached, and in some alternative universe, accepted by Man City, it would make Hemp the most expensive women’s footballer ever.

Despite being just 21 years old, Hemp is one of the most respected and appreciated players in the country.

Hemp has established herself as one of the most exciting players in the Women’s Super League. She has won four Young Player of the Year awards in the last five years and she is a solidified senior member of both the Manchester City and England squad.

Her rapid pace down the wing, pinpoint crossing and ability to finish from all angles makes her the ultimate threat in attack.

During Euro 2022, she contributed a goal and an assist against Norway. While it was a quieter campaign by Hemp’s usual goalscoring and assisting standards, she still pulled a lot of creative strings.

She won FotMob Player of the Match against Austria after creating four chances — more than any other player on the pitch — and completing 100 per cent of tackles attempted, two clearances, and drawing three fouls.

Who scored a back-heeled goal for England Women in the Euro 2022 semi-final vs Sweden?

Hemp has scored eight goals in 28 games for England overall and boasts 41 goals in 93 appearances for Man City.

During the 2021/22 season, she bagged ten goals and six assists in the WSL alone.

As it stands, it seems Hemp is very happy at City, but a fan can certainly dream of signing one of England’s brightest talents ahead of what promises to be one of the most exciting WSL seasons yet.
