The magnitude of Euro 2022 has left an imprint on the hearts of the nation after England ended a 56-year wait for victory.

Sarina Wiegman and the Lionesses brought their first ever major trophy home after sweeping aside European giants Spain, Sweden and Germany in the knockout stages.

It was an awe-inspiring run from start to finish, with records broken multiple times along the way, and the beauty of it all is that this is just the beginning.

Lynsey Hipgrave, who will lead BT Sport's Premier League coverage for the 2022/23 season, spoke with GiveMeSport Women about how much the landscape of women's football has been changing.

The presenter, like many others, has acknowledged how much of a turning point Euro 2022 has already proven to be for the sport.

"I think the 2012 Olympics England vs Brazil game at Wembley was a massive watershed moment," Hipgrave said. "And I think this whole tournament [Euro 2022] is going to be the next one where we see the game take on an even bigger leap to the next level.

"We can already see the difference in the game and how it's progressed over the last few years. We saw the quality on display in the England vs Spain game at Brighton — it was such a good contest. I watched that with my husband and he was absolutely gripped by it.

"We got to the end of the match and I had this big grin on my face because the first thing he said to me was 'when's the next game?'"

England lifted the trophy at Wembley on Sunday and have since announced that they will return to the capital to host a mouthwatering international friendly clash against the USA.

Tickets have already completely sold out for the fixture in October.

The Women's Super League is also seeing the knock-on effect of Euro 2022, which set a new record of 87,192 for the highest attendance at either a men's or women's European match.

Brighton and Hove Albion announced earlier this week that season tickets sales were already up by 249 per cent compared to this time last year.

"We are changing people's opinions — people just have to watch and see the technical skill on display," Hipgrave said. "The fact we've got these exciting games, top players, and brilliant goals as well.

"You can see by the amount of people at the grounds and the atmosphere there that there's a massive appetite for it, which will only encourage more money into the game, more sponsors, more attention and then that cycle will just keep going.

"The game will keep improving to another level, we have more players who can fully focus on football, players who are being treated in the right way so they can perform to the best of their ability — and that's where we will see the game constantly grow."
