Chelsea look set to complete the signing of Brighton's Marc Cucurella in the coming days.

Chelsea confirmed the news that they had completed a deal for his signature having swooped in and stolen him from under the noses of Manchester City.

He's not going to come cheap, however, with The Athletic reporting that a whopping fee in excess of £60 million is in the offing for the Spaniard's services.

It's a statement signing from Chelsea, who have struggled to land some of their key targets in the summer window.

However, beating City to the punch will be seen as a bit of a coup for the Blues, but is Cucurella really worth the effort?

Well, using Squawka's handy Comparison Matrix, we've compared his stats with those of other established left-backs currently plying their trade in the Premier League.

It might not make for very pretty viewing as, across a number of different metrics, Cucurella falls well short of the competition.

In fact, across the 15 'per 90 minute' variables we included, Cucurella tops just one; tackles made.

You can check out the other results, in the images below:

It's a straight shoot-out between Joao Cancelo and Andrew Robertson with the Man City man pipping his counterpart by six metric wins to four.

Luke Shaw, perhaps surprisingly, tops the 'Chances created' charts while also taking first prize for 'Crossing accuracy' and 'Successful crosses and corners'.

Arsenal's Kieran Tierney managed to finish top of the clearance charts after an injury hit season as well.

Marc Cucurella in action for Brighton

It's likely to be more of the same this season as well with the ever-energetic Robertson and imperious Cancelo look to drive their sides to more silverware.

In truth, Cucurella might be better off keeping his attentions close to home.

Cucurella's direct competition at Chelsea will be Ben Chilwell, who will be desperate to get back to his best after an injury-curtailed season.

As a result, we chose not include Chilwell's stats as he only completed seven games.

However, Cucurella will have some very hard work on his hands if he wishes to usurp the Englishman.

Are Chelsea signing a £50 million back-up? Only time will tell.
