The Premier League has undergone many rule changes since its debut season in 1992. England's top football division constantly adapts to make it one of world football's fairest, high-quality divisions.

As it's home to the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and many more - the league needs to excel in absolutely everything, which is inclusive in officiating laws.

So, naturally, the league, year by year, gets new rules in order to improve - with practices regarding goalkeepers and penalties under the microscope for this upcoming season.

The IFAB has announced this change to penalties to look out for this season:

  • The goalkeeper's position for a penalty kick has been amended in the IFAB Laws of the Game.
  • When the ball is kicked, the keeper must have at least part of one-foot touching, or in line with, or behind the goal line. The law still requires a keeper to have at least part of one foot on or above the line until the moment the spot-kick is taken.
  • Therefore this means that the keeper can not stand behind, or in front of, the goalline.

This has been brought in to make the penalty kick as fair as possible for the taker. In the past, many have got away with minor penalty laws, but this new implementation may lead to many keepers slipping up this campaign - resulting in the spot kick being retaken.

With VAR apparent in the league now as well, this can be spotted very easily. So expect to see the rule come into play a few times in the upcoming campaign.

The new rule will be drilled into keepers' heads by their clubs; however, when it comes down to it in a game situation, we anticipate that many will forget this slight rule change.

Many other rule changes are also coming to the Premier League for the 22-23 season, and you can view them here.
