Put this one in your ‘dream match’ conversations, because WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther has said he wants to wrestle John Cena

Gunther arrived on SmackDown in April alongside Lugwig Kaiser and quickly made a big impression on the main roster.

On June 10th episode of the blue brand the 34-year-old defeated Ricochet to become the Intercontinental Champion, the first Austrian to ever hold famous title.

Now the Ring General is the holder of one of WWE’s most prestigious titles, it’s opened-up a line of exciting possible matches for the man formally known as Walter. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, he admitted he wants to make the IC title important again AND do it by wresting John Cena.

I am going to give this title the prestige it needs and make it the greatest prize in wrestling. I would like to wrestle John Cena and anyone else who is considered elite. I didn’t come here to be mediocre. I came here to be in the ring with the best.

Before he can get his hands on John Cena, Gunther’s next opponent looks set to be Shinsuke Nakamura, and the pair were wildly expected to meet at this past weekend’s SummerSlam. However, the match is yet to take place, although it could be an option for Clash at the Castle – given Gunther’s big European reputation.

The Intercontinental Title has struggled to be showcase in recent months and hasn’t been defended on a WWE premium live event since WrestleMania 37 in 2021.

Gunther is no stranger to making titles the centrepiece of his act, having held the NXT UK championship for an incredible 870 days before dropping it to Ilja Dragunov in 2021.
