Haaland vs Nunez: Lynsey Hipgrave predicts which Premier League star will have big impact

Lynsey Hipgrave predicts Man City vs Liverpool

The new Premier League season is just a day away, and excitement is building around what promises to be another electric campaign.

With Manchester City and Liverpool both strengthening in the transfer window, another close title race can be expected.

BT Sport’s Lynsey Hipgrave, who will lead the channel’s Premier League coverage, gave her predictions ahead of the new season.

Man City made a statement signing when they welcomed Erling Haaland to the club from Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian joined in June to replace the legendary Sergio Aguero, who departed last year after a decade at the club.

Liverpool also saw a key player move onto pastures new when Sadio Mané signed for Bayern Munich this summer, ending an iconic era with the Reds.

The Merseyside outfit were quick to move on the market and snapped up Uruguayan Darwin Nunez for a record transfer fee of £85 million.

Courtesy of the fans, an unofficial rivalry has brewed up between Haaland and Nunez to see which star player will have the better debut Premier League season.

Hipgrave highlighted Haaland as the most exciting Premier League transfer and is eager to see what he will produce throughout his time with City.

“I’m really excited to see how he’s going to do in the Premier League,” she told GiveMeSport Women. “It’s what we want — we want the best players in the world coming into the Premier League.

“You put him in a team like Manchester City who, let’s be honest, create chances for fun and I think everyone else should just run and hide.

“It’s hard not to think that City couldn’t clean up this season. They scored 99 goals without an out-and-out striker and you stick one of the best in the world into that team.

“I think they’re going to win three Premier Leagues in a row, I really do, and they could well finally win the Champions League this season as well.”

Man City vs Liverpool title race

For the last four seasons, Liverpool and Man City have been locked in a close rivalry as both have continuously pushed for the title.

The Reds ended a 30-year wait for a top flight title when they stormed to victory in 2020. They finished a whopping 18 points ahead of City, who had previously pipped Liverpool to the title the season prior by just one point.

It was a similar story last term — despite Liverpool losing just two matches, they finished one point behind champions City once again.

Hipgrave believes it will once again be another close affair, but City are more than capable of extending their winning streak.

“I think City are going to have the edge. Liverpool only lost two games in all of last season and City still pipped them to the title, so I think Liverpool would have to be almost perfect to get one better on them this time round.

“Liverpool are an absolutely brilliant team, I think they’ve built their squad really well and they handle situations with outgoing players like Sadio Mané really well. With Luis Diaz being in there already, Diogo Jota has been a brilliant signing, and now bringing Nunez in really quickly as well.

“I think they will push City all the way again, I think they’re that good, but I just think City will have the edge.”

Hipgrave praised the business Liverpool have completed over the last two years and especially lauded Diogo Jota as a “brilliant signing.”

Since joining the Reds in 2020, the Portuguese forward has scored 34 goals in 85 appearances across all competitions. Jota is close to matching the 44 goals he scored during his time at Wolves, where he played a total of 131 matches.

Chelsea’s chances

Despite the close rivalry between Man City and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table, Hipgrave expects there to be more teams involved in pushing for the title this season.

Many expected Chelsea to be right up there challenging for last season’s title, but they fell away from the pack early on and were unable to regain momentum and rejoin the race.

Whether they can kick into another gear this season remains to be seen. Their business on the transfer market suggests they are looking to step up, but only time will tell just how well the Blues will fare.

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel passes instructions onto his players

Hipgrave picked out Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling as impressive signings for Chelsea but admitted the club need “a couple more” new names through the door still.

“They’ve got a lot of players who don’t want to be there who they need to offload. There’s a lot of work to be done and I think the fact that Thomas Tuchel is not happy is quite telling.

“I think he’s a brilliant coach and he has time to sort this out but I think for the start of the season, this squad is not going to be in the place that he wants it to be. And if you fall behind early on, it’s very hard to catch up in the Premier League as we well know.”
