We're on the eve of the new 2022/23 domestic season - and we can't wait for it all to start again.

Clubs around Europe are now finalising their squads ahead of the big kick-off. However, with the transfer window remaining open throughout August, teams still have a few more weeks to make any additional signings.

But clubs are running out of time to agree on fees with another club as well as personal terms with the player. Most of the work should be done by now.

Instead, many teams might be best served looking towards the bargain bucket of free agents.

Despite the domestic season starting tomorrow in England - and in the next week around Europe - there are still several players available on a free transfer having left their previous club on a free transfer.

As a result, using Transfermarkt we've identified 16 of the best free agents that are still on the lookout for a new club. Give it a week or two and we reckon most of these will have been snapped up...

Andrea Belotti

Belotti is the most valuable free agent right now, worth around £18m following his spell at Torino. However, don't get too excited because the 28-year-old looks set to join Jose Mourinho's Roma.

Jason Denayer

The defender left Lyon at the end of last season and looked set to join Serie A Torino until the deal collapsed. The Belgian, who has been capped 35 times, has no doubt got a club lined up because he's far too good to not be snapped up.

Adnan Januzaj

Remember when the former Man Utd winger was the next big thing? Now 27, Januzaj left Real Sociedad at the end of his contract and is being linked with a return to the Premier League with both Everton and West Ham seemingly interested.

Serge Aurier

The former Spurs right-back helped Villarreal reach the Champions League semi final last season. He's now left the Yellow Submarine and has been linked with Atletico Madrid and Fulham.

Dan-Axel Zagadou

The 23-year-old was released by Borussia Dortmund despite playing 19 times for them last season. He's been linked with Manchester United this summer.

Isco

Once one of the best midfielders in world football. Now, aged 30, the Spanish midfielder is without a club after leaving Real Madrid. It sounds like he'll be heading to Sevilla but it's still very much up in the air.

Cristian Tello

The former Barcelona man enjoyed five seasons at Real Betis before being released. Now 30, Tello hasn't attracted many suitors this summer despite being free.

Diego Costa

Does anyone fancy a battering ram of a centre forward? The 33-year-old left Atlético Mineiro and is a free agent. He's been heavily linked with a return to Spain to sign for Rayo Vallecano.

Dries Mertens

Okay, Mertens is 35 now but it's crazy to think he's still without a club after departing Napoli. Inter Milan appears to be the most likely destination.

Edinson Cavani

Cavani is still on the lookout for a new club after being released by Manchester United. The most recent reports suggest Borussia Dortmund could be keen.

Marcelo

Like Isco, Marcelo was released by Real Madrid this summer and is still without a club. One of the greatest left backs football has ever seen but now 34 and a free agent.

Juan Mata

Mata was let go by United but the 34-year-old hasn't had too many offers this summer. He was controversially linked with a move to Leeds a few weeks ago.

Fabian Delph

Delph had a tough 21/22 campaign with Everton and the 32-year-old is on the lookout for a new club to prolong his career. We're not quite sure where he's heading...

Loris Karius

Anyone want to give Karius a second chance? It seems not...

Hatem Ben Arfa

Ben Arfa is now 35 having left Lille. To be fair, it's not as though the Frenchman worked his socks off during his peak so his advancing age shouldn't matter too much. His agent recently called Ben Arfa the "the biggest waste in football of the 21st century."

Danny Drinkwater

Drinkwater's £35 million move to Chelsea was a bit of a disaster in truth. Now 32, the midfielder has acknowledged he's wasted some of his best years as a footballer.
