Manchester United are still ‘thinking’ of bringing Ajax winger Antony to the club this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Brazil international has been the subject of United’s interest for several weeks now, but so far, they have been unwilling to match his hefty price tag.

What is the latest news involving Antony?

Last month, a report from GOAL revealed that the Red Devils have offered €60 million (£51m) for Antony but the Ajax hierarchy are holding out for a fee closer to €80m (£68m).

However, United have prised centre-back Lisandro Martinez away from the Johan Cruijff ArenA since then, causing the reigning Eredivisie champions to up their asking price.

The Daily Mail have now disclosed that Ajax have now placed an £84m price tag on Antony in order to underline that he is not for sale to his potential suitors.

And Erik ten Hag’s successor in Amsterdam Alfred Schreuder has underlined his confidence that the South American attacker will stay put in a recent interview with ESPN.

“I really think he will stay... we have also bought players. But we have sold so many players that I assume nobody will leave,” said the 49-year-old tactician. “If we sell one more key player, it wouldn't be good for us.”

What has Romano said about Antony?

Ajax have already sold Sebastien Haller, Andre Onana, Ryan Gravenberch, Nicolas Tagliafico, Noussair Mazraoui and Martinez this summer in what has been a transitional period since Ten Hag’s departure.

And Romano believes the mass changes mean the deal for Antony is ‘not an easy one’ for United to complete at this moment in time.

He told GiveMeSport: “This is why the Antony deal for Man United is still something that they're thinking, but it is not an easy one at the moment. They are not willing to offer €90 million (£75.7m) or €100 million (£84m) for him.”

Do Man Utd need Antony?

United only found the back of the net on 57 occasions in their 38 Premier League fixtures last term, the lowest tally amongst the top eight teams in the division.

Therefore, adding extra firepower to their forward line is surely something Ten Hag is eager to do before September’s deadline.

But paying up to £84m for a 22-year-old who has never played outside of Brazil or the Netherlands or scored over nine goals in a single league campaign would perhaps not represent value for money.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Anthony Elanga are capable of providing a goal threat from out wide and will all be hoping to have much improved seasons under Ten Hag.
