The survey was taken by YouGov for Betfair ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Premier League and the Frenchman beat the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan Shearer to the crown.
In fact, as many as 15% voted for the legendary Arsenal striker.
In truth, it’s hard to disagree with Henry being the greatest the Premier League has ever seen. In his initial eight-year spell in north London, Henry scored 226 goals for the club becoming their record goalscorer.
He was the runner-up in the 2003 Ballon d’Or but there was no doubt that, for years, he was one of the best players in world football.
But in 30 years of Premier League football, we’ve witnessed some astonishing players. So where did all the other stars rank? Well, let’s take a look at the top 20 greatest players in Premier League history as voted for by the fans.
Disagree with the rankings? Don’t blame us…
20. Rio Ferdinand
19. Petr Cech
18. Vincent Kompany
17. Patrick Vieira
16. Didier Drogba
Five absolute legends in Premier League history.
Ferdinand and Kompany were defensive titans for Manchester United and Manchester City respectively, leading them to numerous league titles.
Cech has been voted as the second-best goalkeeper in Premier League history, holding the record of the most clean sheets.
Viera captained Arsenal for many years and led them to an incredible unbeaten campaign. The Frenchman deserves his place as one of the best central midfielders in Premier League history.
Drogba enjoyed two spells at Chelsea, winning four Premier League titles, scoring 104 goals. He was an incredible striker.
15. Roy Keane
14. Wayne Rooney
13. Paul Scholes
12. Peter Schmeichel
11. Frank Lampard
Some more Premier League legends for you…
Keane is often underrated when it comes to naming the best Premier League players of all time but he’s been ranked as the 15th greatest here.
Ahead of him are three Man Utd icons.
Rooney may be slightly disappointed with his 14th position as he sits below Scholes – who loses out in the Scholes vs Lampard vs Steven Gerrard debate. The Chelsea hero finds himself in 11th.
And in 12th is officially the greatest goalkeeper the Premier League has ever seen in Schmeichel. There can’t be too many arguments about that one.
10. Sergio Aguero
9. Ryan Giggs
8. Kevin De Bruyne
7. Mohamed Salah
6. Dennis Bergkamp
We have two current stars in the top 10 greatest Premier League players of all time in De Bruyne (8th) and Salah (7th). Recency bias or will they find themselves even better placed in this list by the time they leave this division? Only time will tell.
Elsewhere in the top 10 is former Man City striker Aguero. He’s the fourth top goalscorer in Premier League history – although is just one ahead of Spurs’ Harry Kane.
Giggs, who has played the second most matches in the league and won a record 13 Premier League titles, is ranked ninth.
The magician that is Bergkamp just misses out on a place in the top six.
5. Steven Gerrard
4. Eric Cantona
3. Alan Shearer
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
- Thierry Henry
So, Henry has been crowned as the greatest Premier League player by fans with 15% of the vote.
For Arsenal, he scored 175 goals in 258 Premier League appearances and led the club to two Premier League titles.
Henry pipped Ronaldo to the crown, who came in second ahead of the Premier League’s record goalscorer, Shearer.
King Eric (Cantona) also makes the top five (4th) while Gerrard comes the clear winner of the aforementioned debate with Scholes and Lampard.
For what it’s worth, we fully agree with Henry being voted the greatest Premier League player of all time.
As for the rest of the ranking, well, we’ll let you argue over that…
