The summer break is underway in F1 but you can forget all about there being a quiet period, with this the time of the year where drivers’ futures are usually decided for the season, and seasons, ahead.
Indeed, several drivers have contracts up at the end of the current campaign, whilst moves and deals have already been agreed for 2023 with Sebastian Vettel leaving Aston Martin, and being replaced by Fernando Alonso, whilst Alex Albon also has a new contract agreed with Williams.
One thing that is far from sorted, though, is Oscar Piastri’s future with it becoming clear that he would be on the grid for 2023 but it not certain just what colour car he would be in.
He’s been linked with the Alpine drive for a long time given he’s been in their driver programme for some time, but there is growing evidence to suggest he is going to be driving for McLaren in 2023.
Indeed, RacingNews365 has broken the story that a deal has been agreed for Piastri to replace Daniel Ricciardo at the Woking-based team, though the former Red Bull driver has a contract with them until the end of 2023.
Alpine, of course, took to Twitter to say that Piastri was going to be driving for them next year, something he, now rather infamously, denied on social media himself, and so it’s become a rather intriguing saga to follow in the last few days.
For Ricciardo, meanwhile, it could be coming clear that he needs to find a new drive for 2023 if he is to remain on the F1 grid.
Indeed, as per Autosport, Ricciardo has been told by McLaren that they intend to replace him for next year with his fellow Australian, and so now Danny Ric faces a search to find new employers for next campaign.
The natural, and perhaps expected, move would be for him to head back to Alpine, who he was with when they were last named Renault, but there are reports that several other teams have also asked about his availability for 2023.
Ultimately, nothing has been confirmed just yet but it does look as though more changes to the driver line-up for ’23 are just around the corner.
