Tottenham Hotspur would love to sign a specialised left-sided centre-back to complete Antonio Conte’s defence, according to Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic.

The Italian has overseen a busy transfer window at Hotspur way this summer but there is still plenty of time to strengthen further ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What have Tottenham been up to this summer?

Six new signings have arrived so far with close to £100 million splashed on the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Djed Spence, as Conte puts his mark on the side.

After qualifying for this season’s Champions League spirits will be high among the fans that they could be in for an exciting campaign.

The focus now appears to be turning to shipping out the players who have been deemed surplus to requirements this season.

Giovanni Lo Celso is reportedly closing in on a return to Villarreal while Tanguy Ndombele has been the subject of interest from Marseille.

Harry Winks has been linked with the likes of Southampton and Everton this summer, while Sevilla are interested in taking Sergio Reguilon to Sevilla, although the left-back’s wages continue to prove a problem.

But there remains one position that the club would love to strengthen, according to The Athletic’s Tottenham correspondent.

What has Eccleshare said about the position?

Eccleshare understands that Tottenham are looking to bring in a left centre-back in the future who matches the ability of Christian Romero on the right.

Eccleshare told GIVEMESPORT: “Last season, Spurs basically had no one else who could play left center-back. Partly as a consequence of the fact that Conte came in mid-season with a different system that necessitated that position, whereas they hadn't really had the same need for it before.

“What Spurs would love is Romero on the right, who has been absolutely outstanding. If you could have a player of his sort of level on the left, you're talking about really, really good defence.”

Is this a priority for Tottenham?

Given there have not been many rumours linking Spurs with new centre-backs in the past weeks, it would be surprising if this was a move the club made this summer.

Clement Lenglet has arrived on loan from Barcelona and, as a left-footed defender, could offer a short-term solution to that problem.

But, judging by Eccleshare’s comments, it does appear that it is in Tottenham’s long-term plans to sign a permanent fixture for that role.
