Colby Covington suffered 'serious' injuries during alleged assault by Jorge Masvidal

UFC legend Daniel Cormier has said that Colby Covington is suffering from ‘serious’ injuries as a result of Jorge Masvidal’s alleged assault earlier this year.

Back in March at UFC 272, Colby Covington went to war with friend-turned-rival Jorge Masvidal. The two battled it out over five rounds and while ‘Chaos’ did have to overcome some adversity, he was still able to secure a convincing unanimous decision win to seemingly put an end to their feud.

Alas, that wasn’t the end of the story, as Masvidal reportedly felt like there was still some unfinished business to settle.

Later that same month, ‘Gamebred’ allegedly assaulted Colby at a Miami steakhouse and landed several shots on the former interim welterweight champion.

We’ve seen conflicting reports regarding the health of Covington but now, the aforementioned Daniel Cormier has provided what many would consider to be a worrying update.

“Colby Covington is dealing with some serious injuries from being brutally attacked on the street by Jorge Masvidal,” Cormier said. “Colby Covington needs to stay away from the public eye and do exactly what he’s doing and while making money? Hats off to Colby Covington.

“To be attacked in that way, viciously, it would be hard to come back and do other things. Colby Covington is doing what he needs to do, relaxing, playing some cards, and making money. So, it’s a good thing.”

Outside of competing in a poker tournament recently, Covington has largely stayed out of the spotlight given the ongoing legal situation.

When will he return?

Based on the information that’s been gathered, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Colby Covington doesn’t compete for the rest of 2022.

Between a possible court date and recovering from the injuries he sustained in Miami, the 34-year-old will likely sit back and take stock of the situation at 170 pounds. After all, if Leon Edwards is able to defeat Kamaru Usman later this month, that could set him up for another crack at the belt.

Masvidal, meanwhile, also has to try and resolve these legal matters while simultaneously trying to secure the biggest fights possible as he continues through the twilight of his career.
