WWE confirmed eight days ago that at Clash at the Castle on September 3, Roman Reigns will defend his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Drew McIntyre.
However, based on last night’s episode of SmackDown, it seems like Drew may not be the only wrestler gunning for Reigns.
At the end of the show, Karrion Kross returned to WWE following his shock release last year, attacking McIntyre being hinting that he’s got his eyes set on Roman.
The moment came as a surprise to many fans, with no one really expecting Kross to come back and immediately be presented as one of WWE’s top stars.
Fightful Select has now posted an update on what last night’s events may be leading towards, and it makes for some very interesting reading.
The report explains that, as of right now, WWE is planning on having Kross challenge for one of Reigns’ World titles.
Among the pitches we’ve learned is that Kross would be inserted into the Drew McIntyre-Roman Reigns feud and be involved in a match for one of Roman Reigns’ world titles, as opposed to both.
If it happens, this will be the first time since Reigns won became the first-ever Undisputed WWE Universal Champion that he’s only defended one of the titles.
This would indicate that the Universal and WWE titles are going to be split up, and Fightful also has some more information on that.
The report notes that the USA Network wants to have a top champion appear on Raw more often, which certainly hasn’t been the case since Roman won the WWE Championship in April.
This would mean that WWE could be looking to take either the Universal or WWE titles off Reigns, and put them onto either Kross or McIntyre.
Reigns has been Universal Champion for over 700 days, so Head of Creative Triple H is unlikely to take that belt off him, so losing the WWE title does seem more likely.
There is no word on when a Kross v Reigns match may be taking place, but some have speculated that Roman may be pulling double duty at Clash of the Castle, so perhaps it’ll be there.
