Match of the Day returned on Saturday evening following the first few days of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Arsenal kicked off the campaign on Friday evening with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

Saturday’s action saw Liverpool draw 2-2 with Fulham in an entertaining clash, Chelsea narrowly defeat Everton at Goodison Park, Tottenham Hotspur and hit four past Southampton.

Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Leeds United also recorded opening weekend wins over Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanders respectively.

Gary Lineker was joined in the BBC studio by pundits Alan Shearer and Ian Wright to cover the games.

While the show is very serious and provides expert analysis, the trio also have a joke every now and again.

And Shearer did just that when analysing Southampton’s loss to Tottenham in north London.

The legendary Premier League striker, now 51 years old, has gone viral for producing ‘An early submission for MOTD content of the season’.

When Southampton’s Jan Valery headed the ball straight to Heung-min Son, Shearer grilled him for not getting out to close the Spurs man down quick enough.

“Why doesn’t he come on over?” Shearer said, before singing “Valerie!” in reference to Amy Winehouse’s 2006 song. Watch the moment below…

What a great singing voice Shearer has. It’s just a shame he didn’t go all out.

Shearer’s colleagues weren’t very amused with Shearer’s singing.

Wright commented: “Oh dear!”, while Lineker, after a brief chuckle, stated: “Carry on…”

Shearer, to his credit, quickly composes himself and quickly recommenced his serious analysis.

Football fans have been laughing at Shearer’s singing and you can view some reaction below…

Oh how we’ve missed Match of the Day.

The Premier League continues on Sunday with Leicester City taking on Brentford, Manchester United welcoming Brighton and Manchester City travelling to east London to take on West Ham United.
