Chelsea have a huge interest in signing Leicester City cente-back Wesley Fofana before the end of the summer transfer window, according to Ryan Taylor of the Daily Express.

Thomas Tuchel has overseen an eventful summer at Stamford Bridge and, although the Premier League season has kicked off, the Blues could still add to their squad before the window slams shut.

What is the latest on a deal for Fofana?

After the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, bolstering the club’s centre-back options has been a priority for chairman Todd Boehly.

Kalidou Koulibaly has signed from Napoli but there appears to remain a desire to add to the position before the deadline.

Leicester star Fofana is seemingly their new top target but, with the 21-year-old under contract at the King Power Stadium for another five years still, an £85 million price-tag has been slapped on him.

Chelsea have already seen bids of £60 million and £70 million rejected for his services and are now set to return with a third offer, with the player keen on the move.

What has Taylor said about a move for Fofana?

The journalist understands that Fofana, who is valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt, is a player the Blues are huge fans of but that the club’s defensive situation is a fluid one when it comes to the transfer market.

Taylor told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Chelsea's situation with defensive targets is fast-changing and interchangeable in a way because you've got, for example, someone like Denzel Dumfries that, if he was to come in, you could have Reece James at right centre-back.

“So it’s a fluid situation really, where it's not guaranteed exactly what's going to happen. I think Fofana is obviously a player of huge interest to Chelsea because he's a top-quality young player with a big future.

“He's already proven in the two seasons he's had in the Premier League, although one was largely spent injured, that he's got what it takes to play at this level.”

Would Fofana be a good signing?

Since signing from Saint-Etienne in 2020, Fofana has been spoken of as someone with huge potential and Brendan Rodgers has frequently piled on the praise too.

The youngster made his return from a broken leg in a Europa Conference League clash in April, coinciding with his fast for Ramadan, but he still produced a top performance.

Rodgers said: "He is an absolutely phenomenal talent, this young man. When you think that he had not eaten or drunk a thing because of Ramadan, he is a star in the making. The raw talent, the anticipation for a defender. He is going to be an absolute elite player.”
