Chelsea: £85m star's 'head turned' by move to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel in charge of a Premier League game

Chelsea are continuing negotiations to sign Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana this summer and there are ‘no doubts’ the player’s head has been turned, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Thomas Tuchel has overseen a busy summer at Stamford Bridge and they could be set to spend their biggest fee of the window yet, with weeks remaining until the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest news on Fofana?

Two new defenders have signed for Chelsea this summer in the form of centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly and versatile left-back Marc Cucurella, but further recruits appear to still be on the agenda.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have both departed on free transfers and the Blues have been linked with new recruits all summer, including Jules Kounde and Josko Gvardiol.

But their top target now appears to be Leicester ace Fofana. The club have already had two bids rejected by the Foxes, the latter of which was around £70 million, and they appear to be closing in on the £85 million asking price set by the East Midlands side.

What has Jones said on the Fofana deal?

Jones understands that negotiations over a transfer for Fofana have continued into this week and says that the next couple of days will be crucial.

The transfer insider adds that there is no doubt the player’s head has been turned by the interest from Chelsea too.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “But from a Leicester point of view, this is the price that comes for them with a defender of this level, and when United caved in and paid it for Harry Maguire, from Leicester’s point of view, they think Chelsea will stump up this time too.

“To be honest, I’m starting to think they will as well. Negotiations have continued into this week. There’s no doubt that the players head has been turned. I think in the next couple of days, we’ll see which way this deal goes.”

Would Fofana be a good signing for Chelsea?

If a club pays £85 million for any player it is going to cause plenty of debate, let alone a 21-year-old who has just recovered from a broken leg.

But he is a player that Tuchel is a huge fan of and it will be encouraging from a supporter’s perspective to see the German being backed by the new regime at Stamford Bridge.

There cannot be many better places for the £51,000 per-week ace to learn and improve either. Playing alongside the likes of Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta and Koulibaly is bound to only have a positive impact too.
