Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag ‘really rates’ PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Philips Stadion throughout the summer following an outstanding 2021/22 campaign and could link up with his compatriot at Old Trafford.

What is the latest news involving Man Utd?

United have been attempting to prise Antony away from Ajax for several weeks now to no avail after failing with a €60 million (£51m) for the Brazilian attacker.

It was claimed that the Eredivisie champions were demanding €80m (£68m) for the skilful star, but transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently informed GiveMeSport that that figure has now risen to €100 million (£84m).

Ajax have already offloaded a number of key players and appear determined not to let any more depart this summer, forcing United to assess alternative targets.

And The Mirror have claimed that Gakpo is one of the players on Ten Hag’s radar after winning the Dutch footballer of the Year award last time out.

The Netherlands international, who reportedly has a £40m price tag, is also being tracked by Arsenal and Leeds United, though, meaning a deal could be difficult to conclude for the Red Devils.

What has Jones said about Gakpo?

United are yet to make any additions to their forward line this summer despite losing Edinson Cavani on a free transfer.

Jones has informed GiveMeSport that Gakpo is a player ‘that they do actually like’, though, and he become a viable back-up option to Antony if Ajax continue to play hardball.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “Gakpo is one that they do actually like, and Ten Hag really rates him. There is a feeling that he's more gettable than Antony.”

Would Gakpo be a good signing?

Gakpo has established himself as one of the Eredivisie’s most promising young attacking talents since rising through the ranks at boyhood club PSV.

Last season, the left-winger registered 21 goals and 15 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions, firing his current side to the Dutch Cup.

The youngster is also capable of playing on the right-hand side and through the middle if needed and could provide the strength in depth in the final third of the pitch that Ten Hag is looking for at United.

Whether Gakpo is able to replicate his output for PSV at United is the biggest question mark, but Ten Hag should have a solid understanding of his potential after watching his development in the Eredivisie.
