Martin Braithwaite was given a hostile reception during Barcelona's Joan Gamper Trophy victory over Pumas UNAM on Sunday evening.

The Danish striker joined the club in 2020, arriving in an €18 million move from Leganes.

Barca gave the Danish striker a four-and-a-half year contract.

Braithwaite has been in and around the first-team since signing for the club.

But, after making 58 appearances and scoring 10 goals, Braithwaite is no longer wanted by Barcelona.

Barca are desperate for Braithwaite to depart the club to help ease their financial woes. He has been told by Xavi that he is not part of his plans and is surplus to requirements.

It's well known that the club are in financial turmoil.

They cannot register their five new signings, including Robert Lewandowski, as well as two players that recently signed new contracts. They need to cut their wage bill in order to comply with La Liga's salary cap requirements.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona have asked Braithwaite to terminate his contract so he can look for a new club.

However, Braithwaite will only agree to leave if he is paid his full salary for the remainder of his deal.

Many Barca fans are frustrated with Braithwaite and want to see him leave.

So, when he took to the pitch and was introduced to the crowd before Barca's game against the Mexican side at Camp Nou, he was heavily booed.

Braithwaite emerged with a smile on his face but, upon hearing the boos, his smile faded away. He was given a pat on the shoulder by Memphis Depay as he took his place on the pitch.

You've got to sympathise with Braithwaite. He still has a few years left on his contract but is effectively being forced out of the club against his will.

Whether Braithwaite's situation is resolved remains to be seen.

If he does end up staying, and Barca aren't able to register their new signings, he may well find himself back in Xavi's plans for the 2022/23 season.

Barcelona went on to win 6-0 against Pumas UNAM, with Robert Lewandowski among the goal scorers. Braithwaite did not feature in the game.
