The Premier League is finally back.

It's been a long summer without any English top-flight football to keep us entertained but the 2022/23 campaign is now underway.

While it was the perfect start for some clubs, others will be wishing they could begin the season all over again.

The same applies to some players.

After two months off, it was clear that some stars weren't quite up to speed with the intensity of Premier League football.

But who were the worst players on the opening weekend of the 2022/23 season?

Well instead of us sitting in our ivory tower and picking on 11 poor players, we're turned to the ratings of WhoScored, via Football365.

Therefore using those ratings, here is the worst XI of the opening Premier League season.

GK: Alisson – 5.79

This seems a bit harsh considering the Liverpool goalkeeper was hardly to blame for his side's 2-2 draw with Fulham. Perhaps he could have done slightly better with Aleksandar Mitrović's opener - although that's nitpicking. But he ranked lowly due to the fact he only made one save throughout the whole match and failed to claim a cross.

RB: Aaron Hickey – 5.95

Hickey attracted interest from Arsenal this summer but eventually made the move to Brentford. It wasn't a dream debut for the right-back who failed to make a tackle, block or clearance during the 2-2 draw at Leicester. He lost all but one of his six duels.

CB: Diego Carlos – 5.65

Another defender who will be disappointed with his debut. Carlos cost Aston Villa £26 million but couldn't stop his side from falling to a 2-0 loss. He lost possession 20 times during the defeat.

CB: Marc Guehi – 5.49

Guehi scored an own goal as Palace lost 2-0 to Arsenal on Friday night. He only won one of his seven duels and was given a tough time by Gabriel Jesus throughout. Officially the worst-ranked player on the opening weekend.

LB: Yan Valery – 5.74

Victim to a fantastic Alan Shearer pun, Valery had a tough afternoon as Southampton conceded four against Spurs. He actually played right-back in north London but has been shifted to left-back here.

DM: Fred – 5.86

While it was Scott McTominay who got most of the criticism for Man Utd's defeat to Brighton, it was actually Fred who struggled the most statistically. The Brazilian lost all four of his duels, was dribbled past twice and lost possession nine times.

AM: Manuel Lanzini – 5.84

Lanzini failed to last an hour as he struggled to make an impact during West Ham's 2-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

RW: Jarrod Bowen – 5.97

Bowen was arguably West Ham's best player last season but he wasn't at his best against City. During his 89 minutes, he misplaced half of his passes, had three unsuccessful dribbles, won only two of his nine duels and was dribbled past four times

LW: Marcus Rashford – 5.98

Same season, same story for Rashford. Despite looking promising in pre-season, the United forward was poor against Brighton and missed a golden chance. He failed to deliver a cross or complete a successful dribble.

ST: Brennan Johnson – 5.73

Forest were welcomed back to the Premier League with a 2-0 loss at Newcastle. Johnson wasn't provided too much service but he failed to take a shot and gave away eight of his 14 attempted passes. He touched the ball 19 times and lost possession on 13 occasions. Ouch.

ST: Adam Armstrong – 5.94

It's not great when you're substituted at half time in the opening match of the season. But that's what happened to Armstrong for Southampton against Spurs on Saturday.
