Southampton: £120k-a-week Premier League star 'unconvinced' by St Mary's move

Southampton may struggle to convince Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi to move to St Mary’s this summer, believes transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Saints have reportedly asked about taking the 21-year-old on loan, but Jones is not sure if a switch to the south coast would appeal to him.

What is the latest news involving Hudson-Odoi?

As per The Guardian, Hudson-Odoi has told Chelsea that he wants to leave the club on loan.

The £120,000-a-week English attacker was left out of the Blues’ matchday squad for their 1-0 win against Everton over the weekend, so it looks like he is some way down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Southampton are one outfit who are thought to be keen on signing Hudson-Odoi, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently revealing that they have enquired about taking him for the season.

Last term, Hudson-Odoi made just 11 starts in the Premier League, though he was unavailable for some fixtures due to a problem with his Achilles tendon.

What has Jones said about Hudson-Odoi to Southampton?

Jones does not think Hudson-Odoi sees Southampton as the right destination for him at this moment in time.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “Southampton is the one that has been most widely circulated. I’m not wholly convinced, at this point in time, that Hudson-Odoi sees that as the best place for him.”

Would Hudson-Odoi be a good signing for Southampton?

If they can pull it off, then without question. While he has failed to nail down a regular spot in Chelsea’s starting XI, it is easy to forget that he is still just 21 years of age.

Considering that, and the fact that he had to recover from a serious injury sustained back in 2019, it is understandable that Hudson-Odoi is lacking a bit of consistency. Overall, he is still a very good player.

Do you know this obscure player Southampton signed in the January transfer window?

Speaking about the England international a few years ago, his former manager Frank Lampard said (via The Independent): “Callum has all the attributes to play and make similar statements on the world scene from what we have seen with Jadon Sancho and other great players around the world.”

He later went on to add: “I know what a player he is. He can be an incredible player.”

All in all, perhaps a loan spell at Southampton, getting regular game time, could help Hudson-Odoi to fulfil his potential. Ralph Hasenhuttl, though, may have some convincing to do if this move is going to happen.
