West Ham United ‘want to sign two midfielders’ before the transfer window shuts on September 1, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Hammers have arguably endured a frustrating summer so far despite being able to welcome a handful of exciting acquisitions to the London Stadium.

What is the latest news involving West Ham?

At the time of writing, West Ham have snapped up goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on a permanent deal, striker Gianluca Scamacca, centre-back Nayef Aguerd, attacker Maxwel Cornet and engine room operator Flynn Downes.

However, with Mark Noble retiring and Alex Kral returning to parent club Spartak Moscow following an underwhelming loan spell, further additions in the middle of the park are being targeted.

The West Ham hierarchy agreed a £33.5 million fee with LOSC Lille for Amadou Onana only for the player to choose their Premier League rivals Everton over them.

That has forced the east London outfit to return to the drawing board, but they could have plenty of funds to finance moves for multiple players if they manage to offload their unwanted fringe stars.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Issa Diop is closing in on a switch to Fulham while West Ham are also said to be willing to listen to offers for both Said Benrahma and Nikola Vlasic.

What has Jones said about West Ham?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Jones said: “West Ham want to sign two midfielders if they can before the windows up. So honestly, they’re spreading the net so wide at the moment, West Ham.

“They've had a pretty disappointing transfer window so far, to be honest, it's been a bit strange. When they got Aguerd in so early, I thought they were really going to make a mark in the window, but clearly, they just prioritised him and made sure they had him.

“But he suffered that injury, and now they pretty much have got the same team as last season apart from Scamacca.”

Who could West Ham sign?

Romano has previously informed GMS that West Ham have ‘asked for’ Napoli ace Piotr Zielinski after missing out on Jesse Lingard to Nottingham Forest.

The transfer guru did state, though, that a deal for the 28-year-old would be ‘difficult’ to complete as the Serie A giants have already lost several key players already this summer.

It’s believed that Napoli would demand ‘at least €40m (£33.5m)’ for Zielinski, who has two years remaining on his contract and registered eight goals and five assists in 42 appearances last season.

Only time will tell if West Ham are able to bring in Moyes’ targets over the next few weeks, allowing the team to continue their on-pitch progression.
